Marvin always complained about not getting big fights. The fight was not a typical 3 round fight as we all know. He knew he would have a hard time getting to that same mental point to beat Hearns again. He never wanted to fight him again, and the fight was there to make. As a matter of fact, I think I recall that beating Shuler meant Hearns would be the number one contender and Hagler would have to fight him.

Please explain this to me. If you said Sugar Ray Leonard did not want a rematch with Hearns I would bee all ears but why would Hagler in some way be afraid to dance with Hearns again. Sure he would have to take som big shots to get to Hearns, but the way you make it sound like Hagler was afraid and Hearns would be the favourite in a rematch makes no sense at all to me.

Hearns got in a couple of huge shots but lets be real here. Its not like Hagler was like raving around the ring like Holyfield against Bowe or Khan against Maidana in there in that round.

He was maybe stunned for a second and clinched / held whatever for two seconds. He backed off a little but then put pressure on again almost right away. It certainly did not look like he was very hurt, and when Hagler said he wasnt hurt in the fight I don't see any reason not to belive him based on what I saw.

I mean the first round is what Hearns fans talk about but 2 out of 3 scored it for Hagler and rightfully so imo becasue Hagler did hurt Hearns in the first round , and late in the round Hearns is in real trouble on the ropes and is stumbling back.

It's easy to see Hearns have rubber legs after the first round. He even said that himself in the HBO show after. His reach and boxing skills made him have some sucsess in the 2nd round but I don't see that the punches had any affect on Hagler at all. He was desperate in there at that point and ready to go.

We can talk about cuts and broken hands and all that but I think it was a domintaing win for Hagler.

In what other fights in history have a KO3 in a fights that was basically over after one round needed a rematch to prove who the better man is. Maybe there have been a few but I don't see how this fight left anything to be proved.

Slight edge to the 80's, but you can't go wrong with any of the fights.

that was a very different 3 round fight than any other. And Hearns had bulked up from the year before by 1986 as the Shuler fight showed. I don't think if both guys come out firing big punches like that, that being tired is surprising. If you look at round 3, Hagler was tired, and at the end of round 2 he was arm weary. Angelo Dundee said he was surprised the fight went out of the first round.
