I'm suprised to see so many people declare Pete's footwork superior to Floyd's. Pete crossed his feet throughout his whole career - something he got caught doing and something that was noted prominently during the first Ramirez bout. This is a fundamental mistake that Floyd is too meticulous in his own technique to repeat with the regularity that Pete did.

Pete's footwork was fantastic and he could box as well off the backfoot as I've seen, BUT, his footwork, technically, wasn't as good as Floyd's, who, IMHO, is just as impressive with his movement, can move around the ring as quickly, if not, quicker, than Pete did, with better balance and technique.

At the same time Ali's footwork wasn't as technically good as Norton, Quarry, Terrell, Liston, etc, but it was more effective than any of theirs.

Yes, but the athleticism behind his footwork was so superior to theirs, that it negated the technical aspects for the vast majority of the time. I do agree with your point and I'm not intending that technically sound footwork is all that matters. However, I am saying that when their athletic gifts are so close (Pete and Floyd that is), I'm inclined to side with the party that had better technical footwork, used better angles off the footwork and didn't get dropped or wobbled, due in part to being off balance due to faulty technical footwork, relative quality of opposition considered of course.

Of all the things you choose to give to Mayweather this is the one? I'd say it's one of the clearest categories for Whitaker.

Happy someone else agrees with me. FMJ's will to win is stellar, and how often have you seen him leave a fight in question in the eyes of the judges. Once. And that was avenged.

That'd be more impressive if Floyd wasn't picking and choosing his opponents as carefully as a clingy mother chooses a baby-sitter. Nobody had more heart than Whitaker.

I wasn´t thinking about heart to be honest......but Floyd´s concentration is great and in my opinion that´s an aspect of his mental strength....vs Judah, and vs Mosley comes to mind....his concentration on his gameplan after lost the first rounds, and almost been Ko´d was very good and remarkable for me.....

But I guess you could say the same about Whitaker.....vs McGirt...

 At Floyd throwing better combinations. Whitaker was one of the best combination punchers, period.

This could be one of those matches where two very skilled and speedy boxers cancel each other out. I think the key here is aggression, power, and volume punching. Money has the edge in these departments.

    Jab - Whitaker
    Right/ Left hand - Mayweather
    Left/ Right hook - even
Body punching - even, maybe Mayweather
    1 punch power - Mayweather
    Combinations - Pea
    Counter punching - Mayweather
    Ring generalship - Pea
Footwork - Mayweather's technically better BUT a BIG BUT Whitaker uses angles far better
    Defence - even
    Infighting - even
    Hand speed - Mayweather
    Chin/ Durability - even
Athletic ability - Mayweather but and a big 1 Whitaker has a better radar
    Heart/ Mental strength - equal
Quality of opponents faced - Whitaker but Mayweather isn't finished

    I'd add:

    Use of Angles: Whitaker
    Movement: Whitaker
    Radar: Whitaker
    Timing: slight edge Mayweather
    Workrate: Whitaker
Stamina: maybe Mayweather but hard to judge
Strength: depends on the weight class but probably Mayweather overall
    Ability to Adapt: Equal
Ability to breakdown an opponent down: Mayweather
    Longevity: Mayweather
    Self Confidence: Whitaker
