I watched the Facing Ali documentary last night, and I highly recommend it. Extremely interesting, especially Chuvalo's take on things.
Good film. It's just too bad that this wasn't done when Floyd Patterson and Jerry Quarry were still alive. Would have been interesting to see the perspectives of these two men in the movie with relation to their fights against Ali and the other men that fought him too. To hear Lyle talk about Shavers' punching power, more than Foremans, with the KO highlight was excellent.
Chuvalo is a veritable historian, Terrell could sing back in the day ..."Won't you come home dear Cassius, won't you come home... I've trained the whole year through..." But Ron Lyle stole the show: "I was doing push-up on a bowl of spinach..... when I got into max privilege, I could do a thousand push-ups ...in an hour." "I came from a family of religious people. My mother's father was a bishop. My mother's mother was a missionary. My father's mother was a missionary. My father's father... was a bootlegger.... I took aftah him didn't I." ............................ It was fairly done, although it did not really show how much good Ali had in him, even if he could also be an enfant terrible. To call a black man like Terrell an "Uncle Tom" is serious stuff... and it made no damn sense. He's lucky he didn't pull that with Lyle in a studio. I'll tell you that much.
Nice post -- I've seen Chuvalo on Ringside Classics a few times in recent years. He's very knowledgable and articulate. HBO and Showtime are missing the boat by not putting that man to work!
