Its become a common thing to see here at ESB- the idea that Floyd chose to wrestle Hatton as a way of showing him he could beat him at his own game.

My feeling is that it isn't true, and in some cases its a way for Floyd fans to discredit the times of the fight in which Hatton was able to mount success on Floyd. Obviously, Floyd eventually had his way with him scoring the KO. But I haven't ever believed that the whole thing was done by design.

    Thoughts?

Mayweather has always been good with using his elbows on the inside. He rolls his shoulders, and deflects shots. He did good body work as well.

He is better than Hatton at any style.

I don't know what his gameplan or throught process was, but I do know what happened. I do know that he was hitting Hatton with one punch then holding in the beginning of the fight. I do know that he wasn't using any lateral movement in the beginning of the fight(Lederman even commented on this). I also know that he had been drawing Hatton in and throwing that check hook throughout the fight. I also know that he finally started throwing combos after the 6th round and using more lateral movement and jabs.

You could take these events and interpret them anyway you want. No one except Floyd actually knows his thought process.

Agreed, but let me rephrase my question.

Did he purposely choose to wrestle with Hatton the entire fight until he began to pick his shots late in the fight?

I do't believe he did, and I think Hatton is just a strong ****er who dictated that fight for a while until he was KO'ed.

it's total rubbish. Plain and simple. FLoyd isn't stupid. I doubt he would jeapardize his fight trying to do something different.

He probably saw Hatton mocking his padwork on 24/7 and decided to show Hatton he could outmuscle him as well as outbox him.

Fact is that Mayweather's a better in-fighter than Hatton.

I just saw this fight today. HA HA.

PBF came out with the game plan to win on points. Just pot shot one shot at a time. Come in with the lead right hand and move. Come in with the left hook then move. He was scoring at will from round 1 on. Hatton tried to make it dirty but the ref kept breaking them up in the first 4 rounds or so. After that, the ref let Hatton stay in more but Hatton still didn't do anything.

At about the 7th or so, PBF started to put combinations together and come forward. And Hatton was just getting tagged. So to answer your question, i never even saw PBF even attempt to fight Hatton's fight. Hatton just tried to force it but PBF was just too accurate with his punches and caught Hatton coming in time and time again.

I think he realized that all of the mauling on the inside would tire hatton out. I really think he could have beaten hatton at any game he wanted.

Well this is a good post. Its factual, and I suppose thats the point- I think history as ESB would have it may be in error of overdoing it when it comes to this fight.

It is commonly accepted that Ali used the rope a dope strategy to defeat Foreman. It seems more and more common that fans are ascribing a similar brilliance to Mayweather in this fight (at least in terms of strategy, obviously to a lesser degree).

I think he did. I don't think he really thought Hatton could hurt him.

I'm in complete agreement. For the smartest fighter in the game, it doesn't seem feasible to take this avenue.

It just doesn't make sense to assume Floyd tried beating Hatton at his game being the plan from the opening bell.

Maybe the plan going in was to potshot. But having gauged Hatton's strength decided to outmuscle him.
