In 35 years of following boxing, I've never seen a touted HW fighter face more pathetic "competition" on the way up, or less qualified "challengers" once he won a title belt.

Wilder is a total fraud, pure and simple - his "power" is fraudulent, and his chin, particularly so. Can't wait until he's exposed.

Would you say Briggs faced better competition?

Briggs faced Vitali Klitschko. So yes, definitely.

If Vitali was Wilder's mandatory, Wilder would saw a leg off with an old spoon and campaign at cruiser.

Yes, although not by much. First of all, the quality of the HW competition was better in the 90s, when Briggs beat Foreman. Furthermore, his post-Forman competition was not as mediocre, either.

Briggs fought stiffs on the way up, but not as pathetic as the carnival fighters Wilder faced - and he fought more of them. Wilder had over 25 fights before he faced anybody with a pulse.

Secondly, when he won a belt again in 00s, he beat a decent HW belt-holder in Sergei Lyakhovich, as well as some solid journeymen prior to this.

Just to be clear, however, I am not arguing that Briggs comp was stellar, particularly in his second run at the title. Just not as utterly pathetic as Wilder's. Honestly, you have to give Wilder's management credit for their con-game, it's been sadly quite effective.
