Family of Darren Sutherland apply for second post-mortem

    The family of dead Olympic boxer Darren Sutherland have applied for a second post-mortem examination, it was confirmed today.

    The body of the medallist, who was found hanged in his London flat last September months after turning professional, is to be exhumed from a graveyard in Ireland.

    Sutherland won bronze in the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and turned professional, joining the Frank Maloney camp, a few months later.

    Meath County Council has granted the licence to have his remains dug up from St Finian's Cemetery in Navan, Co Meath.

    In a statement through their solicitor, James Evans, the Sutherland family said they wanted to dispel any rumours and speculation over the application.

    "Whilst they are not at liberty to go into the specific reasons for their application given the pending coronial inquest into their late son's death, they feel that the conduct of a second post-mortem into Darren's death will only assist in putting all relevant matters before the coroner when the inquest into Darren's death is reconvened later this year," the solicitor said.

    "They are firmly of the view that the only forum for determining the facts surrounding Darren's death is through the judicial process and not otherwise."

    The stylish Irish fighter was found dead in his flat on September 14 last year in the London suburb of Bromley by manager Mr Maloney.

    He lived with Mr Maloney and his family for four months after leaving his home town the previous year to pursue his dream. He had been living on his own for six months before his death.

    Sutherland appeared to be progressing well in the professional game, winning his first four fights after leaving the amateur game behind.

    The solicitor said it was a difficult and sensitive time for the family, while those close to the boxer's father Tony said the family were still devastated by his untimely death.

    It is understood the council in Sutherland's home town is planning to erect a plaque in his memory.

    Meath County Council said a licence for the exhumation was granted on June 10.

    A spokeswoman said it was a standard licence with a number of conditions attached by a senior environmental officer.

    Yeah me neither Jim.

    Whilst what happened was genuinely heart-wrenching. Fans have lost a great great prospect but his family have lost a man they no doubt loved beyond reason.

    It seems quite clear that Sutherland took his own life so I have no inclination as to why they would want to carry on with this. The only thing I can think of is 'Do they believe he was drugged or something?'

    Given Sutherlands previous battles with depression I would have figured this was pretty straightforward.

    I hope the family can find peace once and for all and let this go.

    think the family don't want to believe the circumstances it happened. it is a tragic loss and is probably easier to think something/someone else to blame. hope they get some peace of mind from this inquest

    If the Sutherland's feel that a second post mortem might shed some light on Darren's death then they are 100% right in their decision.

    Maybe its the relgious side of things, you know what the grim church view is on 'suicide'. Which is in total contridiction to most things that Christ said and did. So very sad for all involved.

    **** Maloney. He was a **** 'post-mortem'. This isn't his tragedy it's Darren's family

    Not saying otherwise pal, I just find it sad that they're putting themselves through all this pain again, considering they're more than likely going to be sitting with the same conclusion after all this is done :good

    That post wasn't directed at you, I know a lot of people don't understand why the family would put themselves through something like that, if nothing comes of it they will have no choice but to accept what happened but I don't think they would be doing this without good reason.

    Yeah no worries pal. It's almost as though they're willing something to be amiss though. Almost praying for it to have been 'suspect'. I know suicide would be a hard apple to swallow but would they feel much better if it came back he'd been killed (regardless of the fact somebody would be punished)? Either way I hope they finally find peace :good

    DAN, do you actually know why the family are having the body exhumed?

    I didn't think so. So don't proffer a stupid opinion that does even more of a disservice to Sutherland.

    It definitly was trippy as **** and nobody claims to know why he did it. Good decision hopefully we learn what happened to him.
