I met Jackson too after his win against Augostino Cardamone at the Worcester Memorial Auditorium near Boston. The Hawk was as nice a guy as you could ever meet. Not that it stopped him from almost decapitating Cardomone, and winning the middleweight crown again.

Yes. Saw him on a video where he is training young lads and he seems a diamond.

Read a lot of conflicting reports from people who met Hagler. What were your experiences?

Hagler was intresting. Very short. Small head but even dressed up he has really long looking arms. He seemed a really honourable man, principled and serious but at the same time quite chilled out and cheerful. He was a guest speaker at a dinner. Unusually he said he hated all his opponents, even now, but what I think he meant and later described was that to motivate himself against them he took himself to a place where mentally and physically he still can’t look at them and really like them much. He said he respected them too, just that he can’t like them. He Talked and answered questions all night. Was friendly and I met him afterwards for an autograph where he joked with me. I asked him if he was left or right handed and he said “I wipe my ass with this one but write with this one” . He writes with his right hand. There was a white guy behind me with a bald head and a goatee. This was 1999 and maybe it was less common then than it is now, but Marvin was really amused with him when the guy said he was the white Hagler. Marvin was in hysterics and asked for his wife to go over and look at the guy. She was an Italian lady. It didn’t seem that funny to anyone else.

Yes he’s a funny guy. Marvin really lives by a code though. Answering questions from the audience he was often talking about things where he would say “you never do that”. “That’s not right, you never let a man do that”. He seemed extremely disciplined with himself. And it came over how important loyalty was to him. I remember him saying “They took my title away and gave to ray Leonard, of all people!” He’s not fond of Leonard. Lol

after I first shook his hand and took a picture with him, I left to talk to other guys and take pictures and he found me 15 minutes later and his wife gave me the card with his autograph. It impressed me. Sometimes small gestures are huge because it shows what a good person he is. I could tell.

Arguello and Frazier for a fund raiser for the Boxing Hall of Fame. Both were cool and Frazier was very down to earth.

Met Marvin several times....before his fight with Hearns...and just before his fight with Mugabi. He was very friendly and very cordial. We talked boxing for a bit...told him that I had seen him fight in Boston...and that we were at his fights with Hamsho & Sibson. He signed for people...shook hands...posed for photos...was very good with the kids. He's not very big...
..but the man was ALWAYS well dressed!!! Classy guy.....nice experience!!!
