I remember reading a book about Lance Armstrong the cyclist, and in it the author said that it is simply not possible to win a Tour De France unless you've experienced great hardship at some point in your life - because that's where the necessary character is developed. He even went through the recent winners list, and to a man he could point out what those hardships had been.

 

Yes. Rahman Ali fought a 6 rounder same night, but two fights before Ali v Frazier I. Rahman lost, and in his brilliant book on Ali, Jose Torres mentioned that he thought Rahman's loss may have had some effect on Ali's preparation in the changerooms prior to his own bout.

I believe Rahman fought at the Olympics 4 years prior to M. Ali winning his gold medal.

I believe Simms also beat Iran Barkley, which may not seem like too much now, but he was a force to be reckoned with at the time.

 

According to wiki, Rahman Ali/Rudy Clay went 14-3 in his career. He did not fight in the Olympics. He turned pro on 2-25-64, the night after Muhammad beat Liston. I didn't recognize any of the names on his resume, but you guys might.

 

Yeah, you & GAZOC may well be correct - I'll see if I can find where I read it. May have been in Jose Torres' book - but not sure? Could be an example of don't believe everything you read?

Former world bantamweight champion Vic Toweel died in Sydney, Australia, only a couple of weeks ago. Toweel was 80, and settled in Australia about 20 years ago.

Yeah, Joey was a fairly respectable middleweight by the look of his 32 wins, 5 losses and a draw record.

I liked the way Joe Pesci played Joey in the Raging Bull movie. The scene where the fight errupts and spills out into the street is a beauty. Never forget Joey jamming the guys head in the door and repeatedly slamming it on him!

 

Here's one that gives the SANDS brothers from Australia a bit of a run for their money - the five ZIVIC brothers from the USA.

Fritze ZIVIC was world champ (welter I think?) and had a 158 wins, 65 losses & 10 draws record. Fought amongst others Jake LaMotta.

Fritze's four brothers had records as follows:

Peter - 49 wins, 38 losses, 14 draws (bantam).
Jack - 46 wins, 29 losses, 4 draws (welter).
Eddie - 39 wins, 41 losses, 6 draws.
Can't find a pro record for the last brother Joe - but he definately did box.

The Zivic's didn't have anything like the number of fights the Sands boys had - but an impressive fight family none the less!

 

Pesci was so good in that movie he gave DeNiro a run for his money. Did you know that Joe had retired from acting when DeNiro tracked him down in a Bronx restaurant that Pesci was running? They didn't know each other bu DeNiro and Scorcese had seen him in soemthing and liked his work. The conversation probably went something like, "Mr. Pesci, this is Robert DeNiro."

Pesci's great as an actor, but Joe I Love ya buddy, please don't sing!

One of the Zivic Brothers won a gold medal in 1930.

EDIT: Did you recognize the poor ******* who Pesci was bangin' around in the car door as Frank Vincent? The same actor who played Phil Leotardo in "The Sopranos"? By the way Frank is a pretty good jazz drummer.
