Rock Newman had been arguing with the WBC for a couple of years, mostly over the fact they refused to give Bowe a decent rating & had the likes of Rodriguez ranked higher.

Lewis' team turned down a career high payday to fight Bowe (despite the fact that Bowe had accepted a similar deal to fight Holy) & then stalled negotiations until it reached the point that the WBC were going to strip Bowe.

Tbh, the WBC are as corrupt as a 3rd world dictatorship & I kind of admire Bowe showing their belt the respect it deserves, although we sadly never got to see Bowe-Lewis.

For anyone claiming Bowe was scared of Lewis thats just bull****. In 1996 Lewis & Bowe agreed terms & were all set to fight after a routine defence for Lewis against McCall, but Lewis got kayoed & the fight never happened.

 

The term 'Ducking' actually comes from the much sought after bout between Middleweights Hermann Dück and his number 1 ranked challenger Fred Lansbury during 1867 where the bout was all but arranged only for Hermann Dück to pull out with only 3 days to go before the fight after claiming "he didn't fancy his chances" after watching Lansbury spar the previous day. Thus the term 'Ducking' was born.

Pryor himself says that he was offered the fight (for what would've been for him at the time, a career high pay day) but turned it down. This whole Leonard ducked Pryor thing gets way blown out of proportion thanks to Legendary Nights.
