I ran across this just a few minutes ago. This content is protected Just as the title says, but I find the results *extremely* suspect. Amir Khan hits harder than Anthony Joshua? Flatly impossible. My speculation is that these coin-op machines are rigged to produce results within a narrow bracket and/or generate a random figure on top of the base score to protect egos, surprise people, and keep them plinking in quarters. "What the hell? Wesley hit harder than Vince? ****, let's see how Colin and Tyrell do. Quick, go get change..." Does anyone know of any confirmed results with real machines?
This is something that crops up from time to time. There was a test done with Bob Fitzsimmons, Jim Jeffries, and Sam McVea when their careers overlapped. I am aware that similar tests have been done with Frank Bruno and Ricky Hatton. Those are the only ones that I can confirm via primary sources.
I couldn't find anything solid with a quick search, but I found several mentions that Jeffries got 1200 and McVey 1300. I wouldn't be shocked if Jeffries or McVey hit harder than Joshua, but I would definitely be shocked of it's by that wide a margin.
https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/old-time-punching-machines.514922/ There is a link to most of the measurements.
Most interesting. Now if only genuine results could be found for more recent fighters... I don't trust those coin-op machines at all.
Adam Pollack cites a primary source for this in his first biography of Jack Johnson: 1. Sam McVey - 1,270lbs, 2. Jim Jeffries - 1,100lbs, 3. Bob Fitzsimmons - 1070lbs I don't place any weight on the test with Joshua, because it was not a scientific test, or even a direct measurement. It is interesting to note however, that Sam McVea did better than Frank Bruno in a similar test many years later!
It's interesting to note who can generate more power for a machine. But that's all. Because theoretically a guy with no record for knocking people out can score higher than an expert at knocking guys out in real fights. This is because a man can line up all his weight for a stationary target without preparing for anything coming back. It does not take into consideration the guys who in an actual fight can generate even more impact using less force. It cannot register the counter punching ability or the force that generates. Think about it. Have you ever seen a high scoring punch used on these machines actually used in a fight? I see guys take a run Up to hit these things. Seems to me the blows that score highest is the easiest blow to see coming. It would only hit a guy tied to a chair.
I can hit like a 870 on those machines using a punch I have used in sparring before. The shoulder roll right hand. Great for when a guy leads with a 1-2 when I'm on the ropes. Roll the right hand and counter back with your own. The upper body twist puts all your weight into the right side and you just explode it forward fast as possible. I made a yearly tradition of breaking the record at the arcade in the mall where I live. Nothing gets me keyed up to throw a punch like christmas shopping. The music. The crowds. I need to hit something before I head home.
Going by the results on a UK programme called Soccer AM a few years back, danny dyer and some other dude hits harder than evander holyfield. Make of that what you will .
Yes I remember that. I met Lloyd at a dinner once and when I asked him about it he said "the bell went ding and I went Dong"
No these are gimmicks just for entertainment they are not calibrated by the weights and measures folks. These machines are put into bars to reduce fights and I have seen so funny results from people and never gotten the same reading twice.....the way the machine is designed could not measure the true way they are measured with the physics and pounds per square inch rating..
