Heard that Quarry was contemplating a comeback in the late 70s and sparred with a young prospect name Gerry Cooney. Heard that Quarry was amazed at Cooneys power and said he hit harder than anyone he had faced. Eddie "Animal"Lopez sparred with Ali while preparing for his second fight with Spinks. A very good source told me Lopez brutalized Ali at first but by the end of the week Ali got his payback and was putting daily whuppings on Eddie Lopez.
I know Jack Dempsey had friendly sparring goes against Max Schmeling and Max Baer - think - think he might've floored Schmeling actually (will try to find some report and get back to you with it) and I know he said something along the lines of no-one ever hit him as hard as Max Baer - another one I'll try to find a report on is one I remember reading about Jack Johnson giving Luis Firpo a thorough whooping in the lead up to the Dempsey match - and there's the Marciano-Ali wig stuff during the sparring for the computer fight aswell I guess if that counts.
Thanks Russ! Yeah, now it is coming back to me. There is a locaql boxing trainer from Somers Point, NJ named Bruce Blair who I used to run into from time to time. He told me years back that Lou Duva had to ban sparring between Tua and Golota mainly because Tua was taking a real shellacking from the big Pole. In 1997, I saw Darroll "Doin' Damage" Wilson in the Hamilton Mall (Mays Landing, NJ) after his sensational fight against Courage Tshabalala. I approached him and said great fight D. He gave me a big smile and a nice handshake. It is a tragedy how Darroll ended up.
Johnny Famechon and Lionel Rose apparently sparred a couple of rounds on T.V Ringside (a national television show in Australia in the 60's and early 70's) when they were World Bantamweight and Featherweight champions respectively and also prospective opponents. I don't know how serious it was as I've heard differing accounts that they either really went at it to score a mental edge if they ever actually met or that it was just a friendly punch and giggle. I would love to see it to find out which account was true.
naz-pele reid & another heavyweight in the ingle gym bomber graham-eubank, eubank getting embarresed. picture somwhere which i cant find. and eubank gettign dropped/pushed over by a punch by a COMPLETE NOVICE. after he threw a left uppercut other guy kinda threw a poor attempt of a punch hit eubanks glove and shot him off his center of gravity. winky wright-ike quartey should of been interesting
Griffo... They actually sparred quite a lot during their days. Different people make different mentions. Roger Hagan still suggests Fammo had the wood on Lionel, yet Jack Rennie still implies the opposite. I believe all footage is now long gone, although you'll find an interesting piece of footage in the mail later this week or on Monday... Yes, finally sent the bloody book's i'd promised. Interestingly, Mick Canavan (M/W) also sparred with Fammo on TV Ringside. This fact is almost forgotten and argued about a little bit. It's true though, as the pictures appear in the Fighter Magazine.
Thanks mate. I've been checking the mail box every day this week but no worries about waiting a few more days for it :good I didn't know that Lionel and Fammo regularly sparred but it makes sense seeing as they were both Melbourne based, world class and around the same size.I did hear that Fammo looked to get the better of Lionel on T.V Ringside but that doesn't mean much as it was only sparring. You'd think Channel 7 would have Famechon-Rose somewhere in their archives.A few years back they put out a best of T.V Ringside video featuring fights with Hector Thompson,Tony Mundine,Kahu Mahunga and Charkey Ramon who weren't as big names as Fammo and Rose yet their fights were kept on file,so why not two of Australia's best ever fighters in the ring together (even if only sparring)?
Mate, some reports of the major footage from the Ringside days having been destroyed in a major fire at Seven Studio has circulated for years. God knows?? So much footage has to remain, especially when Channels 2, 9 and 0 were also showin fights. Four stations and all we have is a video, plus handfuls of fights from other people film collections
**** thats a tragedy if it's true. I'm 34 and can a still remember watching Bugner-Tillis/Bey,Ellis-Michael and a fair few Fenech fights live on commercial TV back in the 80's so in the proceeding 10-15 years there must be a plethra of fights that were also televised and presumably archived. The scarcity of Aussie fight footage is a real shame. It would be great for people to have ready access to Rose,Fammo,Sands,Michael etc etc fights instead being fed ****ing Anthony Mundine and whatever farce he's dishing up on ppv all the time.
