Basically the title,it doesn't matter you hate em by personality or style, you don't like em. I rarely have one,but I kinda despised Leonard for that two beatings of Duran,I did forgive him now but it still hurts seeing those performances. I don't like how Marquez screams about being robbed on most of his close decision fights all the time. Even as a Duran fan,I don't like the excuses he made back then, good thing he kind of mellows out after that Hearns ko.
Ali (as a Frazier fan but I acknowledge Ali having the better resume and legacy and being one of the best entertainers) Leonard (for the Duran and Hagler fights, but he is still a P4P great)
Floyd Mayweather Jr. "Canelo" Alvarez Mayweather Jr started the smoke and mirrors of being very selective about who he fought and when. Alvarez has taken the baton and ran with it. Larry Holmes can be a little whiney in his old age. But he really wasn't a fan favorite per say, just an under appreciated great World champ that came after Ali and before Mike Tyson, and seems bitter because of it. Holyfield after he got juiced and stronger, however losing the flexibility, speed and skills of his prior self. Turning himself into a constantly fouling battering ram to compensate for it. Bernard Hopkins. Was he actually great? Really? The Charlo Brothers ... Are they still fighting? All the You Tube boxers that have made more money than most of the legit fighters in history... Think of all the 2nd and 3rd rate fighters in history getting their brains turned to mush , for peanuts and these You tubers are making millions of dollars. Sad...... I would love to have seen Bennie Briscoe just torture Jake Paul...
Someone once posted that the fan bases of certain fighters (at least as you perceive those fans) can sometimes impact heavily on how negatively you might view the fighter in question. I think there’s a fair measure of truth to that opinion. Also, even if a fighter is justly viewed as elite and therefore, perhaps, justly popular in due proportion, some fans seem to be perversely disposed to cutting them down - as if the fighter’s very popularity somehow irks them. Personally, I think the highly exposed Ali suffers quite a bit for that type of backlash.
Ali. I’ve tried mightily to become a fan but can’t get there. Received too much favoritism. Got a pass on his out of ring behavior. And most of the time very boring to watch.
I get that feeling about their fanbases, even as a Duran fan I found his fanbase to be a bit like pac, overrated. The same thing kinda goes to Salvador Sanchez unfortunately, although he's a little bit under the radar more than the other two so yeah
With Ali I think it mostly comes down to the fact outside boxing he was a mostly sucky person for a long time, it annoys me mostly when he gets held up as a civil rights hero? I don’t think the black militant UFO cultist gets a pass in my book… I also don't think anyone would try to say he’s less than the 1-2 greatest HW of all time without being “irked” in the way you describe.
Mayweather, easily. I absolutely think he's an ATG. But I just couldn't understand - at the time - how he was such a big draw and breaking all those PPV records. His personality was so dreadful. His style was often quite negative. And, especially in the later part of his career, he did seem to cherry pick a lot. I do try not to let my personal views cloud how I judge him historically, though. Honorable mention for Tyson Fury. Very talented but the King of gaslighting. He wanted to wear the crown but not defend it against worthy challengers
