No I wouldn't. I have seen plenty of 6-1 guys with medium reaches who weighed 210 and were reasonably cut. There's probably half a dozen guys like that at my gym, probably half a dozen more with better, more impressive builds.

Johnson had a good athletic build, though was not overly long of limb, but I think his real genius was between his ears and in his heart.

The Johnson of the Ketchel fight was not a little cut, he was chiseled in an era without weights or juice ... I've also always felt the reports of his reach off ... he seems to have longer arms for the most part ...

When in shape, he looked very impressive. But still, he would be small and normal-ish today. What made him great was not a good physique.

Regarding his reach, it looks to be about the same as Choynski's...

Johnson's listed reach is 74", sometimes I see 73 and change. This would be a tremendous handicap today. Judging by that photo, I would say Choysnki has longer arms, and more " striking distance " and Johnson had wider shoulders.

I think Johnson was probably over 6'1. He was about 205 or 210 pounds in lean "ripped" condition. His walk around weight was probably 225 or more.
He was not average at all.

Most guys who are 6'1 and 6'2 dwarf many of their friends on a day to day basis. Of course, it depends entirely who you are standing next to at the time. Many photos show Johnson next to men who aren't much/any shorter than him. If he looks big that's because he is.

I think this "people have gotten loads bigger" stuff gets exaggerated.

I don't know when I was a kid ,the height I am now was the national average[5' 8.5",] I now have 4 step sons, all over 6'3" and all in excess of 240lbs.

This is a tiny pic but Godfrey, [seen sparring with a mid 40's Johnson,] was 6'3"around 220lbs.

That means nothing. I'm 6'3 or 6'4 and lean at 220, and there are several guys at my gym who are a lot bigger than me, and a few who are taller. There's a ****ing load of short guys too, and little guys, and guys who have spent years bulking themselves up to 180 pounds !
And the average guys on the street are less impressive than the ones who congregate in the gym.
I'm considered a big man compared to average. So too would Jack Johnson be.

In fact, you could tell me Jack Johnson and myself would be the smallest guys at your gym and it would prove nothing except that your gym is full of big mother****ers !

And are all the men of your step sons' generation going 6'3 and 240 ..... or are most of them closer to 5'8.5" ?

The national average in the US is 5'9" which astounds me ,[unless they mean wide,].All I know is when I go to the pub, I am allways one of the smallest there.
