I am a Stanley Ketchel fan, and would like discussions regarding him. Bashing is not welcome. I won't bash who you are a fan of, ever.
I am also a fan of the Michigan Assassin,Stanley ketchel. i have read tons of lore about Stanley Ketchel. I when a youngster bought an old Biography of Ketchel, called "the Michigan Assassin" by Nat Fleischer ,who as a young reporter saw several of Ketchels great fights in NY,including Ketchels two great bouts with Phil.Jack O'Brien @ the old Horse Market in NYCity. The first time I heard Ketchel's name was when I was a young teanager, and an elderly uncle who was a rabid fight fan, mentioned to me several times that he saw in 1909-10,Stanley Ketchel train for a fight at Woodlawn Inn,in Van Cortland Park, NY. He was always talking about how handsome Stanley Ketchel was ! One other point...It was said that those who saw the flame throwing Ketchel, from then on could see no other fighter..Nat Fleischer, who knew Stanley well, claimed that Ketchel told him that " i don't expect to live past 30 years old ". Prophetic was his remark, he was killed at the ripe old age of 24. A meteor crashing to earth, was he...Cheers..
Graziano knock out Ketchel?....I don't think so. Also this is a non bashing thread. So your comment was pointless.
He rests firmly at 436th all time middleweight on my list... just kidding, he was obviously a force of nature at a nascent period of boxing's development... and a 100% bad ass. I think we all know his history to some extent... Johnson, Sullivan, Papke, O'Brien... I have yet to read a really riveting bio of what appears to be a riveting personality and talent. I would not be surprised if Kid Rock is one of his illegitimate offspring's offspring's offspring's offspring... or thereabouts.
No ****. I have a hard time getting excited about a guy beating Shea Neary, tho the movie made it seem like some sort of Louis-Schmeling affair.
When I was in grade school there was a ninety year old woman who came to our school to help with students' reading. She had been an English instructor in her prime. In her retirement she kept active by volunteer work. She talked a bit about her life as a young girl, growing up with nothing but brothers. Then, boxing was a major sport. She got pretty excited telling us about one of her brothers' boxing heroes. It was Stan, The Michigan Lion aka The Michigan Assassin. "He was a great fighter." "He was good looking, too." She had lived in a rural area up on a hill, right outside a small town. There was no radio available to them. She was not allowed to go with her brothers, and father to read the results of one of the Papke vs. Ketchel fights, but said she remembered hearing the wild whoops and hollers from a distance when they and other men, who had gone to town, learned of the outcome. Ketchel had whipped the snot out of Papke in a rematch. This is one of the instances that got me hooked, and interested in Stanley Ketchel.
I read a book called the Killings of Stanley Ketchel about him that I loved. Dynamite read. Made some pretty strong accusations though.
Consider me told. I still enjoyed the hell out of it. I dont know much about Ketchel, truth be told. Thats why I read threads like these. Fun book though
