Wow! You got advice from him? That's simply awesome. A lot of people say he's partial to Stan, but I don't think so. It's seldom that you find a tome about someone, from someone, who actually knew the boxer from that far in the past. I'm so glad that he did know him, because it gave more credibility to the stories about Ketchel's life and career. I know the films that are out there don't give a good sense of how great he was, but there are some boxers that have no film at all about their ability, and are considered great. Some of them cheated unmercifully, but still get accolades that they don't deserve.
I don't think that what you wrote is a bash or anything like that. It's what you believe, written in a gracious way. I can't see being too opposed to that. I know this isn't a genteel kind of forum, but thanks for being respectful.
Where is everyone? Is everyone afraid of "those" who would be historians, and scholars? Give Stan some more life. Does anyone know something more that they could introduce or enlighten this thread about Stanley Ketchel? Stanley Ketchel: A Life of Triumph, and Prophecy. On the thread, where the "****-storm" has taken a turn that argued about one thing. When I entered into the fray, it was to keep someone from trying to kill that book. I know people who have it, and like it. They like it because it gives Mr. Ketchel a more human, more personable view of him. Don't be afraid to be his fan. It's as if a cult of some kind is daring people to take a different view of him. Or, is the overriding person of choice, someone else? Some other boxer, perhaps. Maybe it's felt that Stanley has no place in ESB. People have their favorites, I know, but why not? A friend of mine is married to a man named Stanley Ketchel Johnson. When I saw what his name was for the first time, I could hardly believe it! I had to ask why he was named after him. All he could tell me was that his father, grand-father, and great-grandfather had all had that name, and those men were fans. This man is African-American. Now, in his late 60's. I am intruiged by this finding. I can't help but think there is more. But, maybe not. Maybe too much time has passed, along with too much documentation missing. I always hope for more info., though.
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/art...memories of the ring bill lang&searchLimits= Well here is former world title challenger Bill Lang's opinions of the man. I think it is a pretty good tribute, although he does make a few interesting comments about the fight fixing which do set up some alarm bells for Langford Ketchell in particular but also for Johnson Ketchell also.
