Is anyone else under the impression that Promoters currently think about their fighters paths to a title a lot more than they think about what the fans want to see? I understand that a part of the Promoters job is to look after their fighter and to help them earn as much money in the process (therefore earning more money themselves), but I cant help but be annoyed by the amount of good 50/50 fights that are not being made in favour of one of their boxers fighting a South American with a padded record in order to get a ranking with one of the Governing bodies. When are we going to see more 50/50 fights being made? I am sick to death of boxing cards featuring a big name in the left column and a TBA or a knock over job in the left. Its almost as if they feel they can sell a bill as "great" because they have as many "big name" boxers as possible on it, even though they are in s**t fights. Would anyone else rather see 2 50/50 fights rather than 4 75/25, even though the 4 fights feature big names? because I certaintly would. I know there are certain reasons why fights cant be made. I just hope the promoters start thinking about the fans more and making better fights.
I think at prospect level they try to avoid those 50/50 fights as they are worried if their fighter loses then its curtains, which isnt true, as long as the loser learns from it and is managed correctly from thereon. You do occasionally get them though, Groves v Degale, Fury v Chisora etc Politics and dislike come into from promoters i think to, too much pride to deal with each other.
It's the business side which seems to be becoming more and more prominent these days, aswell as protecting the 0. IMO most champions are made from experiencing a loss or 2, the losses tell you alot more about yourself and where you can improve. But yes I would rather watch 2 great 50/50 fights than 4 75/25.
I was assuming the title was going to be about Paul Smith Jnr arguing with fans on twitter. Seems to be a regular occurance that appears on my TL and I don't even follow him.
I agree with this I can see a very similar pattern happening now for most of Hearns' fighters especially. Fight guys who are ranked above them in the Governing bodies, fighters who they know they are capable of beating who have padded records. They will have 3 or 4 of these "eliminators" then when they do actually step up to a title shot they will get demolished and found out. This is because they will have not learned anything from the knock over jobs they have had previously.
You make a good point, too many posters post these type of threads with no knowledge of business. Boxing fans must accept that promoting is a business and it will be conducted in business terms, which means strategic application. Eddie Hearn, Frank and the rest of the bunch don't want to go out of business to please fans, they want to do the best they can by their fighters, earn money for their own business and lastly; please the fans. Your right though. Cut the bill down and save on over heads, televise 2 fights instead of 6 and have good fighters fighting one another, that makes sense to me.
