http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmWBDcxhxRc Wow! I was blown away by the efficiency of Dwight Qawi's head movement in this match. What a ****ing nightmare for everybody in his division, imagine being a light heavy back in the early 80's and having to face this monster in his prime. Roy Jones Jr VS Dwight Qawi @ 175 both in their primes would have been one of the greatest fights of all time!
Yeah and on top of that he would bend at the waist and knees to get in a wide squat stance which made him even lower!
qawi had excellent upper body movement and was an excellent fighter at this point, right at the top of his game. The performances against Matthew have to be tempered though, by the fact Saad looked pretty faded and had looked worn down in his last few fights.even being outboxed and hit at will at times by someone like Murray sutherland, a decent fighter, but not one who would have trouble the late 70s version.Saad's prime was a short one because of the wars with Johnson and Lopez among others.
Even prime for prime, this would be a visciously tough match for Saad in my opinion. Qawi was a little animal.
Dwight didnt like mobile boxers (Runners) too much so some guys might give him big trouble on the scorecards through their point pinching "minimal Involvement" policy...but come to war with him an he might fillet you ..Big Powerful Jerry "the Bull" Martin found himself Gored by this little dynamo.
Just proves that height and reach aren't everything in boxing. Just ask guys like Quawi, Frazier and Marciano. They were short but learned how to fight short. I remember watching this fight expecting Saad to win but coming away impressed with Quawi even though Saad was a little shopworn by then. Two great fighters. I miss those days when you could watch a championship fight on a Saturday afternoon insread of shelling 50 big ones on Pay Per View or Showtime and staying up till midnight. The good ol' days!
