Exactly. How many other sports can you compare to boxing in terms the access you can get to boxers and people in the game via forums and even face-to-face at weigh ins or at a show? It is a real privilege.
boxers will always getting slagged of and harsh criticisms of a forum. I hear complaints about this all the time from people inside the game like promoters and fighters and it really bugs me. I remember a boxing monthly article piece on the boxrec forum. In that piece there was the opinions of promoters, managers and fighters but never the opinion of a boxing fan who writes on the forum. If a group of mates talking about boxing were in a pub, discussing a fighter the things that get said on eastside and boxrec would be said if not worse, its no different. Its written in a boxing forum because most boxing fans like myself do not have any mates that like boxing, we have to talk about it somewhere. I would not follow boxing to the level I do without eastside as an outlet to discuss boxing. The level of criticism towards boxers is no different to what a football would get on a football forum, or a cricketer on a cricket forum. The abuse I give Peter Crouch when I am with my mates is far worse than anything I have ever said towards a fighter. I am not doubting that theres faceless posters who go on the forums just to get a rise out of boxers. They are easy to spot. some accuse me of this but notice my user name was my real name and i have my real name posted and am friends with various boxers on facebook and speak to them at shows. im not hiding. The majority are giving there honest and sometimes harsh opinion. Can I also point out there plenty of fighters, trainers, managers and promoters who use alter egos to big up themselves and slag of rivals. A fighter that goes out of their way to post on the forum and interact with fans is going to garner more respect and gain more fans than petty comments he receives. Smith gets allot of love support (arse kissing) on the boxrec forum and from certain posters on eastside and thats one reason he gets allot of stick, its more to wind up his fans/mates. Another reason is that Paul is regularly disrespectful to boxing fans and other fighters before without being provoked. He is the first to come out with the what have you ever done in the ring line which I think its the most disrespectful thing you can say to a fan or someone in your line of work and some of his comments towards other fighters notably Carl Dilks and Patrick Mendy are as bad as anything thats been said against him. I accept that posters do need to become more understanding of boxers feelings and they should all have there real name on the forum like myself. They have families and lives like the rest of us, but fighters and those in the game need to wake up and realise, especially in the modern internet era, a pro boxer is a public figure whose job is to entertain the public and with that will come allot of haters and critics along the way. without the forum i would not be as in to boxing as i am right now.
Let's deal with three fundamental points first. 1. Boxers - put their health at serious risk for their sport, these overpaid ****in cry baby football players and cricket players do not. We should never lose sight of the very serious side of the sport that we all love and enjoy for our entertainment, but ultimately from the comfort of ringside or our living room. 2. Do you engage with cricket or football players directly on those other forums? I highly doubt there is another sport were you can get the same level of access to the performers. 3. Boxing is not commonly referred to as the 'red light sport' for nothing. It is brutal, bursting with politics and unlike other sports the best or most deserving do not necessarily get their chance to prove it. But, most of these stories do not see the light of day. If you knew even a handful of the disgraceful stories of how some boxers have been treated you would understand. The realities of the sport doesnt revolve around what makes you intrinsically motivated to follow it, rather, it is what are these young lads going through both mentally and physically. I will tell you exactly how much respect I have for boxers. For me they are of a significantly higher standing than any blockbuster Hollywood star, rock star or any other public figure. In my book anyone that gets into the ring to give it a go, regardless of how good they are deserve the utmost respect. The Boxing Monthly piece that you referred to was a good read and as far as 'not having a fans voice' it wasnt meant to have a fans voice, it was about the reaction of the sports participants. We all have a chance as fans to express our views about any article that we like/dislike on an internet forum, as you have demonstrated yesterday. Overall, I think the internet writer and internet posters give boxing a tremendous vitality, I am merely expressing my uncompromising views on the ridiculous and damaging personal attacks. Final point, I personally think the only person who reserves the right to say 'what have you ever done in the ring' is the boxer - they have earned the right and until you or any other keyboard warrior can say you have laced them up you will have to learn to take that harmless comment on the chin. But, hey, some posters have glass chins.:good
there is a difference between being critical and slagging someone of personally. people don't see the difference allot of the time. saying a fight had a bad performance, is not very good, will not win a fight theres nothing wrong with that and some people think there it. i do not think even ali has the right to sat to a boxing fan what have u ever done on the ring so paul smith certainly hasnt.
I used to think that too i.e. if a boxer turns around and says 'what have your ever done in a ring' was not on. But, the more insight I have got into their world (and I have had a pair of gloves on myself as a kid) I have realised, 'you fully earned that right'. I would never concede that point on most other sports, if not any other sport.
fair enough mate. not bigging myself up but i have had 2 amateur fights. what did you think and say about audley harrison after his last fight?
I thought beforehand that he genuinely had a punchers chance with his size, but Audley, despite his experience and gold medal calibre, let himself down and anyone that bought into his rhetoric - he never throw a spiteful punch. And a lot of people forked out good money to watch that farce. 99% of boxers never get a chance like that. The focus of my criticism (if this is what you are hanging your hat on) is the PPV rip off and apparent brushing under the carpet of the the PPV offering that we - the paying public got i.e. 2 live fights.
looking back on it of course he wasnt the reid against calzaghe but in comparison against froch fight reid got bowled over like he wasnt there. no? watch the ottke fight. he should of been a unified super middlewieght world champion. followed up with a dominate win over magee. a guy who just fought bute. it's similar to stracey - napoles. just because the guy was older didnt mean he was not live. and it was a big win. lacy pulled off a good performance. this is coming from a guy who didnt like robin for his dickheaded antics.
