FANTASY FIGHT: Gene Fullmer vs Gennady Golovkin (15 Rounds/Poll)

I guess the thing here is that GGG wouldn’t have likely been a middleweight in Fullmer’s era and vice versa. I think the size difference is significant and I don’t think Gene has the skill set to offset that. That’s why I went for Golovkin - respect opinions going the other way, of course, particularly from posters who I am keenly aware have greater knowledge and experience of boxing history than I do.

No doubt Fullmer faced the tougher competition but I also feel he met his best opponents when they were often past their best and when they weren’t, he tended to lose to them. GGG didn’t meet the best comp but I think he had the toolset and just outright physical advantages to win this.

 

Fullmer was tough but he'd take too much punishment from GGG. I would take GGG by close decision.

I'm glad you posted that. Look at Fullmer's competition. Unreal. Four times round with the GOAT. I expected Golovkin to brush Canelo aside like Bivol did (different styles and weights but.. same result.. blowout) Was Golovkin not on form vs. Canelo, who was coming up in weight? That threw me. So Fullmer would definitely be a tough nut to crack for GGG.

 

Fullmer fought stiffer competition, by far, probably. You can't sugarcoat that out of the equation. He fought Dick Tiger (middleweight and light-heavyweight champion back in the day when there was only one belt) 3x for chrissakes.

 

Golovkin was on the wrong side of 35 and Canelo was a weight drain specialist on PEDs. Is it really that hard to believe?

 

Yeah. You had some people saying that GGG was the middleweight GOAT. Who could ever say that again after the Canelo fights? What if he had fought Dick Tiger (now there's a real middleweight) 3X?

 

The thing is, Golovkin fought much bigger guys because of the weigh in rules. Moreover he himself was a much bigger guy than Fullmer ... because of the weigh in rules. Moreover in no universe does Golovkin lose to Bobby Boyd, Gil Turner or, heck even Eduardo Luasse. Golovkin was basically untoucheable in his prime, and the only question mark was in which round he was going to KO the other guy in. Golovkin is basically a Dick Tiger who is also a master boxer.

Tiger is not the guy to send in against GGG. You'd want somebody faster and lighter on his feet with a good defence who was smart enough not to charge in head first
