FANTASY FIGHT: Rocky Marciano vs Gene Tunney (15 Rounds/Poll)

Love the Tunneys and Dempsey’s but they didn’t have the luxury of watching film and having the sport advance well beyond what it became. Marciano by KO styles as they were

My guide to picking Marciano over Tunney would be Charles, whom I rate as a better overall boxer and technician than Tunney, and he if couldn't post a win over Rocky, I doubt Tunney could, mind you it would be interesting for 10/12 rounds, and I can see a scenario where Tunney might be ahead at this stage, with Rocky stopping Gene late into the 15 rounder.

Puncher/swarmer grinds down the boxer. Maybe Gene survives, but it's like Charles 1, with Marciano landing 94 punches in the 15th.

 

This is not the foregone conclusion that most people think.Tunney had a great defence and was nimble on his feat,so it is a possibilty that he could outpoint Marciano.That being said the more likely outcome is that Rocky`s punching power eventually is too much for Gene resulting in the referee stopping the fight late in the contest

 

I'll go with a draw.

Mean Gene outboxes and out manouvers him for like the first 9 rounds. After that, Rocky really goes to work and that terrific conditioning pays dividends. Toss up result & most lean towards Tunney by a point on their cards. Terrifc bout.

Who takes the rematch in 8 months?

 

Marciano by late stoppage.
Tunney boxes beautiful early but Rocky s relentless pressure , body punching and sheer strength gradually wear him down.

I’ll stick with Tunney. He carved up Gibbons, and Heeney and easily outpointed Dempsey. Marciano a little too slow. Gene was very fast. If Marciano did win it would be very late and by attrition.

 

I voted for Marciano but this is an excellent appraisal of the fight

 

Marciano is not a foregone conclusion as the winner in my opinion. If Tunney could stay out of Dempsey's way, a much more agile and mobile fighter, he could do the same to Rocky.

Tunney is massively overrated at heavyweight. Maybe if he let Rocky take 4 years off, then faced him in a 10 rounder on a rain soaked canvas he might win.

 

Something worth noting about the Charles v Marciano fight, the first one. Ezzard didn't use his movement, he chose to fight Rocky inside. Maybe that was due to age or poor health- Charles himself said that it was because Marciano looked so easy to hit that he thought he could win that way.
I don't think that Tunney would make that same decision.

Heeney was an absolute non-entity, a nothing, a nobody.

A Dempsey who had three years of soft living and no fighting, a guy whose style was based on speed and balance who was older and stale and winded after a few rounds, a ten round championship fight fought on a rain soaked canvas.

Gene looked fast because we have film of him fighting a bunch of old white dopes. Never a slick, quick twitch fighter did he face.
