Joe Calzaghe admits he thought Roy Jones Jr was "past it" until the legendary four-weight world champion rallied to win his last three fights.
Unbeaten Welshman Calzaghe will fight Jones at Madison Square Garden in New York on Saturday after he had dismissed the American in his autobiography.
"I didn't say Roy was a bum but I said he was past it after his three successive defeats," said Calzaghe.
"But my opinion has changed because he has come back with three good wins."
Antonio Tarver dethroned Jones as the undisputed light-heavyweight king with a second round knock-out in Las Vegas in April 2004.
Jones then lost to Glen Johnson before losing his re-match with Tarver.

Roy Jones is just a prop in a fairytale ending to a great career for me.

    Joe Calzaghe

'Junior' was written off as a spent force by most critics, including Calzaghe.
But the veteran fighter has won his last three fights, including a unanimous points victory over Felix Trinidad at Madison Square Garden in January.
Jones' rebirth is good news for Calzaghe as the now self-promoted superstar hopes to net an estimated £10m for his part in the lucrative 'Battle of the Superpowers' with Jones on Saturday.
The 39-year-old great is unbeaten in his four fights at New York's iconic sporting amphitheatre while it is Calzaghe's first visit to "The Garden" in his final fight for their Ring Magazine light-heavyweight crown.
"He's a legend but I'm a legend killer," Calzaghe said before he left for New York.
"I like him as a guy but I'm going to knock him out, Roy Jones is just a prop in a fairytale ending to a great career for me.
"The venue and the opponent is a fitting finale for me; a legend-to-be ending his day in the place where legends are made."
"I chose Roy, he didn't choose me. I know he has still got power but so have I.

"I don't use mine as much because of my delicate hands but this is my last fight so I won't be holding anything back - I can't have a tickling match!"
Calzaghe is protecting his 45-fight unbeaten record against Jones, hoping to retire with an unblemished record, knowing six of his last eight fights have gone the full 12 rounds.
"I'll use my legendary speed but he'll have to respect my power," said Calzaghe. "This fight will be a treat for my fans as they'll see the best of Joe Calzaghe because I've got Roy Jones' number."

i for one will give him the benefit of the doubt. joe is no coward, he wouldnt take this fight if he thought he was simply gonna steamroller over jones.

of course joe would back track on those comments. he'd look like a hypocrite for taking this fight, with out taking back what he said. this is a money fight simple as that. rjj is past it. we've seen it and can judge ith our own eyes, no matter what press release they give out. wins over hanshaw, prince badju****inwatever, fat ass trinidad dont signify a rjj resurrection. those wins were worthless as far as division standings go. trinidad, badjuju, hanshaw were ranked nowhere near the top 10. andre dirrel annihalated hanshaw like the journeyman that he is. before you cry hater, check my post history. i've never ranted against joe, but boxing fans know this fight is a joke.

    nostalgia.

tell me, in your honest opinion, do you consider jones done? even cnn were questioning the validity of jones-trinidad. jones-calzaghe is just a money making excercise in the vein of pac-hoya.

    Sure he is.

More than likely, he wants to get the sweetest pay day of his career before he heads out the door completely...OH and with his undefeated record intact.

Nothing wrong with that...just the way it is.

Calzaghe picked Jones as an easy last fight to make some money and keep his unbeaten record. When Calzaghe's biography came out Jones had already won 2 or those 3 fights. There is no way that from watching Roy fail to stop or even beat up a small shot fat inactive Tito that Calzaghe reversed his opinion on Jones.

What happend was that the Tito/Jones fight made some money and made Calzaghe think 'I can get a PPV out of Jones.' Before he wasn't commerically viable to fight, whereas now he is, so Joe has backtracked and is talking Roy up when its plain to everyone not looking through Roy Tinted Glasses, that the guy is shot.

he's going to be doing it this saturday. this fight would have enchanced his legacy had it happened 5 years ago. even the most ardent calzaghe fan will tell you this.

If Calzaghe cared about legacy he would have fought Pavlik. Only a very few people think Roy can win, and of these the vast majority either HATE Joe or LOVE Roy.

Jone's last good win was four years ago. That's right, FOUR years ago. The man is 3 (0 ko) - 3 (2 ko) in his last six fights. He's 39 years old. He's a shadow of his former self.

Calzaghe's legacy DECREASES from this because he'll be remembered as the guy who beat an old jones and old hopkins in his last two fights.

the point is the general perception amongst everyone that counts was Pavlik was the best challenge for Joe and he didn't take it. he took the far weaker challenge.

joe should have fought pavlik and beaten him like bhop did and then joe would be getting all the praise that hopkins is.

kessler was a good win for joe. hokins was a good win for joe. but thats beside the point. the point of this thread is that, the rjj fight wont be doing anything for calzaghe's career except add to his retirement fund.

Calzagh is once again trying to insult the intelligence of the fans. This is a money fight, plain and simple. He said Roy was shot and it would be a waste for him to fight him. Now he's trying to backtrack to save face. Most people aren't going to buy this nonsense. Three good wins? My ass. Prince Badi whatever is a bum. Hanshaw is a blown up SMW who took him 12. That same Hanshaw got his ass torn up by Dirrell. Tito was fat, inactive, and clearly a shell of his former self. Sorry Stonerose, but this thread in no way adequately refutes PacFan's criticisms of Calzaghe.
