Tough one lol Marciano would have been quicker not Dempsey quick but....if he wasn't loading up every punch there are times when his hands were fast....but Dempsey was cat like..... fast feet/hands athletic and powerful and an apex predator through and through. Marciano was more methodical and a deliberate mover......Dempsey was a killer at the end his chain ready to corner his prey
I would rather be kod by Dempsey than taking a career shortening prolonged beating from the Rock....was it Moore who said the it felt like being beat with a blackjack....which as close a compliment as Moore can muster for the Rock
Then, what exactly, affords Dempsey an argument for superior greatness over Marciano? And I am speaking in a pure boxing sense, not in that of public hero or iconic entertainer.
On what basis are we awarding Dempsey a certain victory over Marciano? Is that really the most tangible evidence we have to base comparisons upon? How do you rate the 1918 Willard or 1923 Gibbons or Firpo against the Charles, Walcott and Moore that Marciano beat?
I pick Dempsey to beat Marciano, that is a personal choice ,it doesn't imply certainty. For the same reason I pick Dempsey to beat Marciano,ie, faster hands , feet, and better defence, longer reach, better resistance to cuts . I pick him to do better against the super heavies. Many will disagree with me, that is their right.
Thank you. We all get so enamored by his vaudeville performances that we sometimes need reminders like this.
There are two ways speed is usually measured in Boxing. 1. How fast it takes a fighters body/fists to get from point A to point B. 2. When a fighter can throw a high volume of punches in a short period of time. The former is often used to describe AJ. The latter is used to describe people like Pacquiao or Lomachenko. Using the criteria of the former example, Rocky was very fast. But still not as fast as Dempsey.
Dempsey was faster for sure. More Explosive? I don't know about that. Different types of power. Like you said Rocky put a lot of leverage into his shots, and could generate short ranged power which was explosive.
Why doesn't a better record against superior opposition equal superior greatness? If it doesn't, what does?
