You have no idea what I'm even talking about. Like all other topics related to boxing this one went right over your head.

Dempsey laid off for 3 years and came back to fight a prime atg p4p/heavyweight with absolutely no tune up fights and managed to go the distance. That is the epitome of fighting the best.

As usual you know I'm right so you avoid the subject and deflect onto another topic.

Case study in Classicist Delusion. Any logical analysis takes a backseat to mythology. There really is no further need for discussion.

The topic is a comparison of hand-speed ,not an opportunity for you to air once again ,your well documented animosity towards Dempsey.

Show me where I avoided the subject and tried to "deflect onto another subject" ?

I was simply asking if your post was serious, because frankly, because it was bordering on ridiculous.

    Let's recap:

You said Dempsey was better in every way than Marciano

I say, he's not better at facing the best fighters out there for one...

You try and false analogy and missing the point, and state, he went from being inactive, to fighting an ATG HW champion. First, he didn't face his two toughest contenders for years... i.e. Wills and Greb.. He avoided them. That is what I was referring to, and your answer to that was... well what you said i.e. didn't take away from what I said. Second, Tunney isn't on anyone's Top Ten HW's or even Top 15 HW's... so I'm not sure I buy this, ATG HW, when frankly, he'd be rather small in many eras. Third, Tunney MADE his name and secured his status FROM the Dempsey fights, not before them. Tunney wasn't already known as an ATG HW Champion prior to Dempsey meeting him. This wasn't Frazier meeting Ali or anything of the like. Dempsey in fact didn't think all that much of Tunney and figured he'd be easier than some other challengers. Just because he was wrong, doesn't mean he gets credit for taking on somebody he though would be a decently easy nights work, who wasn't an ATG prior to the fight.

Now, when you remove your head from Dempsey's _ _ us, we can maybe have a discussion.

I'd guess Tunney makes quite a few top 15 lists. Can you provide a source that Dempsey didnt think much of his number 2 challenger?

Wills obviously did because he refused to fight him.

If the topic was just about that, it would only need a single response not 4 pages.

I only ask that people use an even playing field when declaring a winner in these hypothetical matches but the field is sloped ever so greater the further back in time we go. If people really want to insist that Dempsey beat better fighters than Marciano, I would love to indulge myself in their arguments to that end.

"You said Dempsey was better in every way than Marciano"

    I never once said that.

Dempsey tried to make the fight with Wills. It was outside forces that prevented it from coming in fruition. Greb wouldn't have heard the bell for the 6th round against Dempsey.

Tunney is acknowledged as a great heavyweight. Do poll and find out. Just because he isn't top 10 h2h doesn't mean wasn't a great heavyweight and he has the ability to upset any heavyweight in history.

Dempsey's opinion of Tunney is irrelevant and I never said that Dempsey thought of Tunney as an atg hw.

I made the thread about their relative hand speed , a question which you didn't even try to answer .
You went straight into your automatic pour sh*t on Dempsey mode. Here are your posts

    "Yet Marciano beat better opponents.
    Go figure."

"Then, what exactly, affords Dempsey an argument for superior greatness over Marciano? And I am speaking in a pure boxing sense, not in that of public hero or iconic entertainer"

"On what basis are we awarding Dempsey a certain victory over Marciano? Is that really the most tangible evidence we have to base comparisons upon?

How do you rate the 1918 Willard or 1923 Gibbons or Firpo against the Charles, Walcott and Moore that Marciano beat? "

"To win this head to head argument, someone needs to convince me that the Willard, Brennan, Firpo, Fulton which Dempsey faced were a better lot, in a head to head sense than the Walcott, Charles, Moore and Louis that Marciano faced... and that hasn't been done" .

At no time have you addressed my question simply because you're not in the slightest bit interested, and that isn't what drew you to the topic.

You saw it purely as an opportunity to heap some more negative sh*t on Dempsey. Cut the BS.
Simply put, haters got to hate.

I'd venture to say he'd also not make quite a few lists. Beating which HW's besides Dempsey (We know his condition) allows you to place Tunney in the Top 15?

Second, what does his no. 2 challenger matter, when he avoided his no. 2 challenger for over 5 years prior? Clearly he ducked one for many years while smack dab in the middle of his prime... yet decided to fight another no. 2 challenger while he was past his best. Logic would seem to dictate which fighter he thought more of. However, I thought I read some articles illustrating this point further that I will try and find. Regardless, the logical inference of the above, can't be that Dempsey thought a lot of Tunney.

You didn't say that quote, but when I disagreed with that exact quote, your response to me was exactly as I said. So either you agreed with that original quote, or I'm not sure why you're quoting me and seeming to argue.

The question is f%cking ******ed. Of course, Dempsey had faster hands than Marciano. Tho, I guess in this forum ******ed contentions are supported as truth on a regular basis. So, if we are just going to answer the question of the OP, then this thread should have been over after one response... like I stated earlier.

God Forbid, one topic branches into a further discussion. God Forbid. I'll go back to every thread and wag my finger everytime someone asks a tangential question or follows a line of inquiry that stems from the original post. See you in a thousand years.

Claiming that Dempsey might lose to the guy who is arguably the greatest head to head fighter under 200 pounds can only be seen as "negative sh*t" by the truest of idolators.

This is your original statement Tunney isn't on anybody's top ten or 15 lists.
A 2 minutes search shows The Ring have him at number 13 Ring and Telegraph writer Gareth Davies has him at14 and Boxing News have him at number 10.There are plenty of others that rate him but I've proved my point. You haven't provenance for your remark regarding Dempsey's thought on Tunney its just your personal opinion, btw Rickard selected Tunney not Dempsey. You say Wills was Dempsey's number 2 challenger for 5 years? The Ring ratings came into being in1924, Whose rankings are you basing this on?
Which contenders did Wills beat in the 5 years previous to Dempsey losing his title in 26 to Tunney? I can find two, Firpo whom Dempsey had taken out in2 rds and smooth boxing Charley Weinert. Are Gibbons,Greb,Brennan,Miske,Renault,Rojas,Godfrey,Tunney,Maloney,Spalla on his sheet?
