ROY JONES JR vs James Toney. :happy

Id forgot just how good RJJ was at his peak & just how much of a blur his hands were vs Toney in 1994. That was a true masterclass.

Its difficult seeing anyone beating Jones at this time in his career.

Its got me thinking that I should be rating him a little higher than I have been on some lists recently.

I realised that Id been holding the Tarver & Johnson defeats against his legacy while at the same time ignoring my fav fighter Morales own defeats saying he was past prime - which he was but so was Jones.

Lets be honest... if Jones had retired after Ruiz then a lot of people would be comparing him to Robinson so what has changed ? because he got what 99% of boxers get at some point in their careers, a KO loss or 2, its crazy, he was 34 yrs old & the men that beat him would have been dominated prime vs prime.

Ps. those who know me, know I like Calzaghe & know that I do want Calzaghe to beat Jones on nov 8th but I just want to pay this tribute to 1 of the greatest boxers to ever grace the ring... in any era.....

ROY JONES JR (especially the Toney fight, beautifull)

    :thumbsup

Yeah, he made Toney, a pretty fast fighter himself, look slow by comparison.

Another fight in which Roy was insanely fast was Bryant Brannon.

Everyone talks about Ali against Williams. This was sort of like the 1990s, SMW version of that.

Meldrick Taylor was lightning fast, so was Ray Leonard. These guys would throw the fastest combos I have ever seen.

    Indeed.

But the way Roy blended speed with power makes him special. Have never seen anything like it. Such a wasted talent IMO, could've been so much more, particularly in a deeper era.

Shaded only by Ali and Tyson in terms of P4P speed IMO, though even there it's pretty close.

    Super post Bill.

As I've said before many times on here, the Roy Jones Jr @ 168lbs from 1994-96:

    Nov 94 - UD12 James Toney
    Mar 95 - TKO1 Antoine Byrd
    Jun 95 - TKO6 Vinny Pazienza
    Sep 95 - TKO3 Tony Thornton
    Jan 96 - TKO2 Merqui Sosa
    Jun 96 - TKO12 Eric Lucas
    Oct 96 - TKO2 Bryant Brannon

This version of Roy Jones Jr was the closest thing ever to an invincible boxer IMO. In every fight his speed and power are just insane. I honestly believe this Jones would have beaten any other fighter at this weight in history, and I include ATGs like Ezzard Charles in that.

, this Jones was easily as good as Duran at lightweight in the mid-late 70s or Ali at heavyweight in the mid-late 60s (I haven't seen any footage of Sugar Ray Robinson @ 147 so can't include him in that).

The stoppage losses mean nothing to me, absolutely nothing, same as Ali's losses to Berbick, Spinks and Holmes meant nothing, and Duran's losses to Pazienza, Camacho and Joppy meant nothing. They do not affect how good a fighter was in his prime, therefore they mean nothing when thinking of a fighter's greatness, IMO.
