Who were the quickest, most mobile fighters in the ring? Who had the most impressive lateral movement? Who was fastest at either closing distance & launching attacks from the outside, or backing up & retreating out of range?
Featherweight: Willie Pep Lightweight: Benny Leonard Welterweight: Sugar Ray Leonard (Tough one) Middleweight: Roy Jones Jr. Light Heavy: Gene Tooney
Ah. My kind of list. Top of my head no research, no repeats LHW jones Middleweight nunn Welterweight Ray Leonard Lightweight Camacho Featherweight Pep Bantamweight crepes Flyweight Canto What am I unhappy with? LW/FW is a cluster. Pep makes it on rep but I think Legra might have been faster. And Lomachenko is blazing. Lightweight is even worse with Leonard, Mayweather, and Howard Davis being so fast I didn't even mention Whitaker. I'm not feeling Nunn. That's Jones spot or maybe Robinson. Kalambay? Maravilla was very fast. Bantamweight I'm drawing a blank on. Gomez was amazing but he was barely there. There's guys like rose but he was no speed merchant. Tim Austin maybe. Been years since I've seen him. I don't think chandler was that fast. Tapia could motor but was he faster than Paulie Ayala?
These were the 2 boxers who sprang to my mind. Both utilised very unorthodox styles with their hands down, their foot speed allowing them to get away with it. Haye at cruiser maybe? Or was his edge in speed more apparent at HW?
I don't know--I think Nunn was a solid pick. With those long legs, he was really, really hard to catch when he decided to go on the move.
I've got Bernard Taylor as the fastest featherweight, and I'd confidently pick him over anyone else in that category. I would rate Howard Davis as the fastest lightweight, although Sugar Shane could be a dark horse pick. Usyk is the clear top dog at cruiserweight and Andre Dirrell is probably the fastest at 168 lbs. despite his countless flaws as a fighter.
Feather=Pep Lightweight=Sweet Pea Welterweight=Sugar Ray Leonard Middleweight=Sven Ottke (Super Middle) Lightheavyweight=Tunney
Great pick on Bernard Taylor!!!!! God that man could glide around the ring! Old timers around the area would tell stories about BT when he was an ameteur-they said he was so fast of footwork that sometimes his opponents would QUIT not because BT was hurting them but because of frustration of trying to catch BT.
Arguable. I think Rigo just had better fundamental footwork. I considered posting Rigo in Donaire's place, but what Donaire lacked in fundamentals he made up for with sheer speed. This content is protected
