Jones, Camacho, Taylor, Ray Leonard, Ali, Tyson, Mosley, Robinson, Laguna, Judah, Hearns. Also some that often get overlooked but were very fast.... Terry Norris, Micheal Nunn, and a prime Reggie Johnson.
Yeah I was watching Laguna-Ramos yesterday. Those right leads he lit Ramos up with were blinding... and his jab was wickedly fast as well.
i would add these to those already mentioned: Mark Johnson Johny Tapia Derryck Gayner even though he was a runner he had some pretty fast hands.
Fantastic choices my 80's man. Howard Davis Jr was the fastest thing i ever saw for a while. People nowadays don't realise how incredibly fast he was IMO. At his peak his speed was other worldly. Hector Camacho inherited his mantle (via the press) thereafter, whether he was faster than peak Davis i don't know, but he's lightning. Taylor was the next to assume the mantle. At 200+ Ali for me without doubt Greg Page had incredible speed and reflex at around 235 early career and Dokes was lightning for 2 rounds. Holmes was fast but i'm not sure he matched Page and Dokes for pure speed at their best stages. Tyson's speed was radically different to these guys via style, size and assets but he too was lightning in his own way.
JT. Have you seen Davis against my fellow Scotsman, Jim Watt? It was in 1979 at Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow. I'm sure it was Watt's second or third defense. Watt was lucky to hold onto his title against O'Grady at a later date. The controversy surrounded the cut O'Grady suffered during the late stages of the fight. By all accounts it was meant to have been an accidental butt by Watt, and the fight should have went to the scorecards. Watt was behind when O'Grady couldn't continue after the doctor examined the cut. The referee ruled that O'Grady's cut was opened by a punch, resulting in Watt being award a technical knockout.
He'd slowed a bit by then, at 28. He was then fighting a bit more flatfooted too. Camacho was slowing a little bit too by that age. Davis at his peak was stupid fast.
