From Welterweight to Middleweight, which fighters would actually be favored over Sugar Ray Robinson? & In your opinion, would they actually beat him? at Middle. maybe two out of three.
Nobody really. There are enough 50.50 fights out there that he wouldn't go unbeaten in reality, but there isn't anybody at those two weights I out and out favour over him.
I've always believed that Carlos Monzon would have neutralized to an extent and decisioned Sugar Ray Robinson...and another astute student of boxing history also thinks the same..Mike Tyson.
Hearns at 154 would be very interesting, but it's a shame Tommy's chin & stamina would let him down late.
I'm going to ignore that Hopkins lost or struggled considerably against the few near-elite adaptable fighters he fought and suggest his ring-generalship and beyond compare old school intelligence would be far too much. Monzon's cold killers eyes and Hagler's angry bald countenance are not going to cut it here.A stronger, more relevant level of homoerotic one-liner is needed to justify beating the original Sugar Ray
Yeah, Monzon appears to be the best bet. Not sold on that though. I got him beating the rest if in peak form.
Maybe Charley Burley? No doubt his style and perfect technic would cause Ray much trouble. He may be the only fighter that Sugar Ray ducked (famous line: "I'm too pretty to fight Burley") Monzon, Hopkins and RJJ are worth mentioning as well.... Anyway I wouldn't favore any of them over Sugar Ray.
Harry Greb,3 times the fighter that Ralph Tiger Jones was ,would be favored to whip any version of Ray Robinson @ 160 pounds. Durable as LaMotta, and infinitely faster and busier than Jake, Greb would outrough and outmaneuver Robinson at middleweight. Greb 8-5 favorite over Robbie who was at his best a Welterweight...Greb in 300 bouts was seldom tagged solidly,as his opponents were ALWAYS "defending" themselves. And if occasionally hit solid, was able to tolerate the blows of Heavyweights. Harry Greb. never gave you the "ball",and was one of a kind''...
I'd favor Greb and Monzon at MW. Hagler may be about 50/50. At welterweight? If God was a welterweight, I'd favor Him. That's about it.
The welterweights with the best chance would be Ray Leonard and Charley Burley. As a wild card, how about Britton? He's uncknockoutable which is a good start, and he seemed to have had a superb defence with a busy counter-attacking style.
