If this thread has been done before and you have seen it then consider this Deja Vu...Deja Vu. Votes are only for the primary styles so no sub styles like Counterpuncher, Switch Hitter , Pick a Boo etc.. I added some honorable mentions for each style: NOTE: Some of the boxers mentioned changed styles later in their career or adapted during a bout by changing their style. No boxer mentioned is or is not exclusive to any particular style./// 1. If the boxer-puncher is really good then that is easily my favorite style. Other than that, I will go with brawler.
Swarmers are my favorites…if you really want to find out what a man is made out of …let him get in the ring with a swarmer
Boxer-Punchers. They are usually the most versatile. They can have the finesse of an out boxer with the punching power of a slugger, best of both worlds. I also like textbook stylists such as Harold Johnson, Ricardo Lopez, Alexis Arguello, Juan Manuel Márquez, Carlos Zarate, Felix Trinidad, Donald Curry, Yuri Arbachakov.
I'm old, way older than those video games classifications. My favorite style is the St Paul style, which began in the early 1900s and is, in my opinion, the most influential style in boxing. Up until the 90s when the decline began and the video game nonsense took over. My second favorite style is the one that goes back to at least Joe Gans and led to Floyd Mayweather. Video game monkeys call it "The Philly Shell" though that term was never heard in any boxing gym until most boxing trainers learned their 'skills' from video games. Probably more a Detroit thing, really.
I wouldn’t classify Wilfredo Gomez as a swarmer, nor Marvin Hagler and Sonny Liston as brawlers. All 3 of them should be considered as boxer-punchers.
Just so you know...nobody uses any of these terms in honest to God boxing gyms. Maybe in fitness gyms, I don't know. No boxing guy that I have ever met uses these terms. If you think that saying "out boxer" or "swarmer" or "slugger" makes you sound like one of the fellas, it doesn't.
I like boxer-puncher but appreciate all styles. I’m wondering if Michael Spinks and Evander Holyfield should be in the boxer-puncher category
Lol! Read the post. This is a simplistic breakdown of you favorite style and that's it. And no I don't want to be part of you circle of "Fellas".
What terms are typically used to describe different styles ? Educate us so we can sound like one of the “ fellas “ which I really aspire to be
Can I say what’s my LEAST FAVORITE STYLE…A style I can not watch …THE SOUTHPAW BOXER PUNCHER Robert Guerrero ..Austin Trout…Antonio Tarver…Vincent Saldivar …Jim Watt ….and yes Marvin Hagler too
