Anyone have one? Mine would be Cosell's for Spinks vs Ali II, which I just rewatched. As it gets later into the fight, around the 12th round I believe, he brings out ALL the feels "..what an extraordinary career! What an extraordinary man he has been in every way..." Not always a big Cosell fan, nor of most commentary itself, but he adds something awesome to the last few rds of the fight, saying some really great things about Ali. This content is protected
Actually that photo was taken prior to Muhammad Ali's 9th title defense against Zora Folley on March 22 1967 in Madison Square Garden. Ali was responding to Howard Cosell calling him Truculent. Look at Howard Cosell's hair, no hairpiece.
Probably Hagler-Hearns for both the ABC commentary with Al Bernstein and Al Michaels and the ITV coverage with Reg Guttege (I think Donald Curry was co-commentating as well). They both capture their amazement and excitement at watching something monumental unfolding in front of them in that unforgettable opening round.
Gil Clancy was an encyclopedia of boxing knowledge...you can actually learn something from listening to him comment on a fight
I liked listening to Steward as well. His passion for the sport always came through and made it exciting especially with Lampley who would equally get jacked during fights. Rewatch the 12th round of Jirov vs Toney. Both of those guys were going nuts!
As a kid I really loved the BBC Rumble in the Jungle commentary: "He's got him! He's got him...and I don't think Foreman's going to get up! Oh my god, he's wont the title back, at thirty-two!" I don't think you exclaimed "oh my god" on the BBC in those days
May yr hands always be busy May yr feet always be swift May you have a sound foundation when the winds of change anges shift May yr heart always be joyful May yr song always be sung And may you stay forever young
