Although boxing has unfortunately become a sport where celebrity and acrimony fuel attention among casual fans, at its core it is a martial art that improves and enobles its competitors. What moments stand out where fighters behaved nobly.

I remember reading that after winning the title from Bruce Curry, Billy Costello let Curry, who was alone and dejected post fight, use the limo Costello had rented to get back to his hotel. This is especially moving when one considers that Curry was a wayward soul who was tormented by personal problems virtually his entire life.

    Anything involving Alexis Arguello.

After beating Roy Jones, Glen Johnson humbly said, 'I'm not the best, I only want to fight the best.'

Kostya Tsyzu went out of his way to comfort Sharmba Mitchell after their second fight, which must have been a nightmarish loss for Mitchell, who had spent years obsessed with redemption after their first fight. And Tsyzu had his good karma paid back when Ricky Hatton paid him a glowing tribute following their fight.

The South Korean held up Roy's hand during the medal ceremony because he knew lost and he apologized to Jones after the match

Tommy Hearns placing the NABF belt in James Shuler's casket after Shuler died in a motorcycle accident only a week after losing the belt to Hearns.

Captain James Dalton tried to win the prize money for lasting four rounds against John L Sullivan, and got stopped in the third round.

Sullivan paid Dalton the money anyway, because he thought that he had put up a brave fight.

I was gonna gonna call out Arguello but he deserves multiple shout outs.
I like the films how the old timers walked across the ring and shook each others hands.
Frazier telling Louis to stop the Quarry fight multiple times.
Holmes telling the ref to stop the Frazier Shavers and Ali fights.
Ray Mancini and Barry McGuigan always behaved like gentleman.
GGG today as well as Lomo are very respectful.

When Max Schmeling fought Mickey Walker, he threatened to quit if the referee did not stop the fight.

Floyd Patterson always acted like a gentleman in the ring and out. he was always there to help the other guy up, whether it was from a slip or a KO and was always concerned about the opponent in that context.

Kevin Barry - after the ref DQ'd Evander Holyfield in the semis of the Olympics (the ref said 'stop' and Holyfield had a punch in motion and dropped Barry - thus the DQ) Barry pulled Holyfield onto the platform with him at the end ceremony

One of my favorites was Arguello's show of sportsmanship after knocking out Kevin Rooney:

Interesting, because from interviews I've seen both those guys seem to me intelligent and extremely likable.

    A two-in-one act:

In 1997, Genaro Hernandez, one of the classiest men to ever step into the ring, was fighting long-reigning WBC super featherweight champion Azumah Nelson.

    1) Leading on the scorecards, Hernandez was punched in the throat in the seventh round by Nelson. Hernandez was then informed that if he couldn't continue, he would be awarded victory and the title by disqualification. Rather than take the easy way out, he refused the offer, saying 'I want to win the title like a real champion'. He duly returned to action and won the title via a split, but deserved decision.

    2) After the decision was announced, he strapped his new title around Nelson's wiast and allowed him to leave still holding onto his old championship belt. He said to Nelson, 'You came in as a champion, you deserve to leave as one.'

    RIP Chicanito.
