Which boxers do you remember most fondly - whether it be memories of sitting on the couch with the old man, listening to uncles talking or being at shows watching the action live... Ali - remember watching him as a kid and not appreciating his skills - thought he was boring tbh atsch Saying that - i can only remember the mid 70s version. Hagler - looked like my best mate's dad...Loved his moodiness - and was beginning to appreciate boxing styles/skills. Lloyd Honeyghan - great underdog who was a local celeb when i was in my mid teens - before he became world champion. He was scared of our dog :yep Terry Marsh - rememeber my mate ( Hagler's boy) always saying that Terry was too skinny and sick looking and then always be amazed at his performance.. Come on , i'm bored here...
Yep, all of that. Surprised you didnlt include McGuigan's win over Pedroza in that too... ...if only Terry Marsh had been more accurate....history could have been different...
James Toney - my favourite sportsman, bar none. Pernell Whitaker - joy to watch. Roberto Duran -a beast. Too many people it seems just think of the chubby, bearded guy in the '80's amazing 4' when they think of him. p4p he was better than the other 3. Mayorga - funny *******...and a hardman, though it sounds like he went too far a couple of times with the antics. The one letdown was his shitty performance against DLH. Archie Moore - enjoy his style, though not seen that much of him admittedly, wee bit hard to find.
Was gonna mention it - but i don't remember him as fondly as the others mentioned. The Loftus Rd fight was brilliant in my memory - but his 'thankyou Mr Eastwood' persona was gone by then - and i actually was more of an Azumah Nelson fan really - but didn't want them to meet as i knew Nelson would smash Barry and i didn't want to see that . As for Terry's accuracy - cheeky
I have to admit i have missed out on James Toney. I need to watch a bit more of him - i know you are a fan of his . Whitaker was brilliant - yeah.
I wasn't really big into boxing at that age, it was all football and rugby for me then. That's why it had to be something really big for it to register. There did seem to be more boxing about then, or at least it was higher in the public consciousness. I'm pretty sure I remember listening to Herol Graham v Kalumbay on the radio in teh 80s. Can't see something like that happening now....
Tony Sibson was on the telly alot too from memory. I reckon Big Frank Bruno must be responsible for a lot of 30-40 yr old boxing fans.
I like fighters who fight with skill more than making It a fight/brawl. Like a chess match. I enjoy watching fighters like Calzaghe, Junior Witter and Ian Napa for example.
His first fight with Tyson was the night before a league cup semi-final 2nd leg at Bristol City. It was my fault Frank lost (well, mine and his inability to take a knee when getting hammered) as I said, I'd take the semi final win over him beating Tyson. I might have changed that with hindsight but it was the right call at the time.
My Favourite fighters to watch these days are:- Juan Diaz- undisputedly the most entertaining fighter in the sport. Floyd Mayweather- undisputedly the most skilful operator in the sport. Jamie Moore- undisputedly the most entertaining to watch in the Uk. Gamboa- undisputedly the best prospect in the world today. I also like watching Haye, Hopkins, Calzaghe, Hatton, Witter and Arthur. From the past i loved Benn, Watson, Eubank, Hamed, Barrera, Paul Ingle, Spencer Oliver, Micheal Brodie, Carl Thompson, Mike Tyson, Roberto Duran, JC Chavez, Barry Mcguigan, James Toney, Felix Trinidad, Richard Williams, Julian Jackson, Arturo Gatti, Micky Ward, Alexis Arguello,Muhammed Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson and the p4p best Joe Louis.
Im not a big fan of watching Pernell Whittaker. yes his defensive performances were brilliant. yes he was a master at what he did. but personally it doesnt really float my boat when talking about my fav all time fighters. Sitting down to watch a fight when you know its going to go the distance has something missing for me. Ray Robinson - superb fighter, GOAT? maybe. Roy jones Jr - He was super, wasnt he? Had he retired following Ruiz he may have been regarded by many as one of the GOAT. Barrera - Pre 2004 version, thought a lot was taken out of him following the defeat to Pacman. Hamed - Transcended the sport during my youth. Benn - no explanation required The list goes on and on....
In my life time... Brits: Benn Hamed* Lewis Hatton Haye Moore Witter Non Brits: RJJ Cotto Mosley Hagler Leonard PBF (purely when watching him at his best and ignoring his persona) Gerrald McClellan * Was a massive Hamed fan at the time, but in hindsight I am glad he lost because he is and was a total ****.
He was good against Takaloo. He should regain his British title, he would beat McIntrye and Anderson.
I like Haye - i reckon he is getting the most out of the game in terms of respect / legacy and money. Some good footage of Gman on Youtube .
