Mine would have to be Scott Harrison vs Michael Brodie. It was the night before Hatton-Tszyu. A good old Scotland vs England dust-up...there was only a few thousand in the MEN Arena but the Scots all gathered into one section of the arena making it a cracking atmosphere. Nice little fight too, a good two-way brawl before Harrison landed a heavy body shot to end it in the 4th round. Close but no cigar: Calzaghe-Lacy Hatton-Tszyu Harrison-Mccullough Calzaghe-Kessler Yet to make the big trip to Vegas or New York but it will happen next year!
I suppose that my favourite fight attendance was my first biggish one, John Stracey V Ernie Lopez at the Albert Hall in 1974. Ernie was stopped with cuts in the 7th round with both fighters quite badly marked up.
It was a great fight but I don't think the atmosphere was that good. It was a weird atmosphere, the stadium was too big for a boxing fight.
I don't know...I thought the atmosphere was incredibly good! It was like a fight between good and evil at the gates of hell, with so many people shouting - it was that dramatic! I'll never forget it, in great part, due to the atmosphere. But I agree with you, at times the experience was surreal - the crowds were so big and the noise volume so high and waves upon waves of shouting echoing throughout the stad...
John Conteh Ko3 Len hutchins at Liverpool Stadium. I was 12 years old and the atmosphere was electric. The Stadium was a fantastic venue purpose built for boxing, great ABA nights there as well. Incidentally Leon Spinks knocked out Peter Freeman on the undercard, 1 round. Little did I know, less than 1 year later.......
The recent Carl Johanneson vs Micheal Gomez fight was class. Gomez brought a stack of supporters and so did Carl, the entrances were electric and the fight was a modern domestic classic, utterly brutal and well executed plus my fighter showed guts to win. The build up was good too, the fighters had given each other a few jibes and had a little shoving match at a press conference. After the fight they were honourable to each other. The rest of the bill was great as well. Full of action packed even match ups with the odd fave of mine like Billy Boyle, Danny Reynolds and Fewkes. Doncaster Dome is a venue perfect for boxing (it has parking space).
where were you sat mate? I was with Oliver Harrison and my missus by Mikes corner... classic, brilliant, electric. Ringside for Moore Macklin was fantastic. Best atmosphere of any fight ive been too. Hatton Mayweather for occassion.
I'd agree with you. Unbelievable atmosphere. I think it would depend where you were sitting, also. Actually had a few Danes near us and they were great too. It has yet to be bettered in my experience.
