I was thinking Benny Lynch but to be honest, I don't really have a favorite. Once we get below Featherweight, I get bored.
Heavyweight: Muhammad Ali Cruiserweight: Evander Holyfield Light Heavyweight: Archie Moore Super Middleweight: James Toney Middleweight: Marvin Hagler Junior Middleweight: Kokichi Wajima Welterweight: Johnny Bratton Junior welterweight: Emanuel Augustus Lightweight: Takanori Hatakeyama Junior lightweight: Bobby Chacon Featherweight: Erik Morales Super Bantamweight: Israel Vazquez Bantamweight: If you somehow don't know by now then you never will. Super flyweight: Roman Gonzales Flyweight: Fighting Harada Light flyweight: Jung Koo Chang Minimumweight: Akira Yaegashi. I kinda cheated with some of these because not all of their career happened at those weights but I wanted to put them on the list. I ended up having to not put my fifth favorite boxer of all time here because he shares a division with my fourth favorite. That was tough.
The nice thing about this is that you can sort of pick and choose where you want some of the guys to go. That way you can get a few more of your favorite fighters in. Heavyweight: Muhammad Ali Cruiserweight: Carlos De Leon Light Heavyweight: Bob Foster Super Middleweight: Michael Nunn Middleweight: Marvin Hagler Junior Middleweight: Oscar Albarado Welterweight: Manny Pacquiao Junior Welterweight: Julio Cesar Chavez Lightweight: Roberto Duran Junior Lightweight: Bobby Chacon Featherweight: Danny Lopez Junior Featherweight: Nonito Donaire Bantamweight: Ruben Olivares Junior Bantamweight: Johnny Tapia Flyweight: Chartchai Chionoi Junior Flyweight: Michael Carbajal Strawweight: Ricardo Lopez
Here’s mine, which would probably change in some cases upon further reflection: Junior flyweight: Michael Carbajal Flyweight: Mark Johnson Junior bantam: Johnny Tapia Bantam: Jeff Chandler Junior feather: Wilfredo Gomez Feather: Sandy Saddler Junior light: Bobby Chacon Lightweight: Roberto Duran Junior welter: Saul Mamby Welter: Pipino Cuevas Junior middle: Julian Jackson Middle: Frank Fletcher Super middle: Roy Jones Jr Light heavyweight: James Scott Cruiserweight: Evander Holyfield Heavyweight: Larry Holmes
Heavyweight: Muhammad Ali Cruiserweight: Evander Holyfield Light Heavyweight: Eddie Mustafa Muhammad Super Middleweight: Roy Jones Jr Middleweight: Bernard Hopkins Junior Middleweight: Thomas Hearns Welterweight: SRL Junior welterweight: Kostya Tszyu Lightweight: Edwin Rosario Junior lightweight: Azumah Nelson Featherweight: Jeff Fenech Super Bantamweight: Wilfredo Gomez Bantamweight: Jeff Chandler This is actually a torrid question for me. I'm just not that invested in that many boxers. I like and appreciate almost all of them while loving not that many. Like most i could name almost a handful at heavyweight but for me pickings become thin throughout the entirety of the divisions down to Bantamweight. Ali is Ali tho i do have about three right behind him. Holyfield i am not overly attached to but respect his abilities so there he is basically via total lack of opposition. Eddie Mustafa was an easy choice as i was enamoured by him right from the start via those silky skills allied to one punch power even if he did grossly underachieve thru laziness both in and out of the ring. Roy Jones is another pick via lack of opposition. He's there because he was just so great to watch and so talented. Hopkins is my only more modern fighter, i was late to the party on him but caught all of his success after moving up from middleweight. Hearns was a standout choice, he was my favorite fighter at one point. I hated SRL but grew to respect his talents and record only after seeing how much crap he got in here year after year. He's no standout as i could just have easily put SRR and maybe even should have. KT is another choice without a choice as he fought out of Australia, i caught a lot of him and he was very powerful and quite exciting. Rosario is a standout choice, huge fan of him and Howard Davis Jr and couldn't split them until they fought and i mildly sided with Edwin. Nelson is another stop gap, i find him largely underappreciated and one helluva fighter. I could have fit Fenech in at any of three weights and had to see where he was most needed to help with my list LOL. Gomez i actually disliked for his dirty fighting but i also appreciate his immense talent and great watchability so he's there. I liked Pintor more than Chandler for years but that swapped over for some reason. I'd say i have six standout favorites above and the rest are there for lack of a better choice which is a bit sad
It’s thanksgiving in the states and I’m having dinner and spending time with the family. I unfortunately don’t have time to expand my list at the moment but will do so as soon as I find the time.
I just chucked the list together pretty quickly so I could post the thread so unless a name jumped out at me, I didn’t put it down. I mean there are plenty I like - Duran for one, Chavez for another but no clear favourite for some reason.
Totally understand. I could have left multiple divisions open but pushed myself to get a name in there. I could be forgetting one or two names too so will see if anyone else pops up in coming days.
I’d admire the thought and effort you put into it, JT! It’s also why I said in the my opening post that nobody needs to force themselves to list all the divisions if they don’t have a favourite, because, you know, sometimes you just don’t. I’m like you in that I have a few clear favourites but then the others I’d probably just be putting a name in for the sake of it. I’ve also realised that a lot of my favourites come from the era when I was first getting into boxing, the ‘90s, plus some from the preceding era of the 80s which I really fell in love with through buying tapes of those fights and fighters. Now I find myself appreciating a number of fighters rather than being a huge fan of them.
