That hook Donaire landed on Darchinyan to end their first fight was a good 'un.

 

And of course SusyQ that ended the first Marciano-Walcott bout, the most devastatingly devastating monstrous cracking bone shattering crunching crushing piledriving bulldoze of a punch that was ever launched by any fighter past present future!

 

Just had a quick peek at the body shot. What a beauty! Sanchez was covered up pretty well, elbows in tight in front of and around the body as best as was possible but Ward absolutely threaded the needle with that punch, to the exposed area just past the elbow point, pin point accuracy, the true beauty of a great body shot - a very worthy candidate. A vomit inducing punch.

 

Actually, it was Fitz’s blinding speed that caused the problem - difficult for the cutting edge, 5 frames per minute camera to catch.

Let’s just say it was the 1890s version of the phantom punch, a lightning strike snuck in between the 12 second frame intervals.

Very unlucky not to have caught the exact moment of the legendary solar plexus punch sinking into Jas J Corbett’s soft abdomen.

In reality, Fitz was so fast he could put out his bedroom’s main gas lamp and be in his bed before it got dark. That was because he had another gas lamp on his bedside table that needed turning off also.

Be thankful that Corbett didn’t hitch his “trunks” higher to create a pseudo belt line in order to cry foul when the legit body shot did land.

Corbett’s attire was barely fit for public viewing as it was.

 

Now this is a response i can get behind. Pugg that makes so much sense and I hadn't even considered it and honestly I love the explanation, Fitz is someone that I lack knowledge on. Corbett did show a whole lot of ass.

I would kill a man with my hands to see the solar plexus shot that floored Corbett, I know it was an epic punch and in my mind I imagine Corbett collapsing much like Qawi did from Foreman's body punches.

 

For a good period after his fashion faux pas in Carson City, the press derisively spelt Gentleman Jim’s name as CORBUTT.

Exhibiting typical Zoolander mentality and IQ, Jim took this as a compliment, not the insult it was intended to be.

Suffice to say, Jim was a model idiot - no comma in between.

In ALL seriousness, the solar plexus punch is somewhat viewable. There are some amazingly cleaned up and enhanced versions of Corbett vs Fitz out there.

The revelation for me in viewing that fight was how well Corbett fought up until and including the 6th round - after which his inactivity really began to tell on him - and it was also after he dropped Fitz in that same round (round 6) and went for broke trying to put Ruby Robert out.

I don’t think Corbett was as light a puncher as we have been lead to believe, certainly put some hurt on Fitz until Jim started to gas.

 

The look of absolute agony on Arturo Gatti’s face when Mickey puts him down with that hook to the liver in Round 9 really says it all.

I don’t know if he would look to be in any more pain if a surgeon took a scalpel and removed his spleen without anesthetic right there in the middle of the ring and then showed it to him.

I would add that one of my favorite highlight-reel type KOs was Mark Wills over Greg Page in their rematch. After the referee paused the action to put Page's mouthpiece in, Wills basically ran across the ring and landed a bomb of an overhand right. This used to be on YouTube, but I can't find this anywhere now. They only have their first fight posted.

 

Good call here. Reggie Johnson's KO of William Guthrie via right hook was rather brutal as well....

 

7 Jab Kovalev-Yarde.To be fair Yarde took much heavier shots earlier in that fight and it was an accumulation of a bad beating he took from a huge puncher who was on a different level to him even though Yarde did hurt Kovalev once also.

 

Patterson’s left hook (“leaping” for more specific distinction?) on Ingo in fight 2. After the first time you saw it, it remained indelibly etched in your memory forever.

Ray Leonard’s blindingly fast left hook on Davey “Boy” Green. A gunshot sound rang out and Green immediately dropped and hit the deck like a dead man. Ray was like a Wild West, fast draw, gunslinger.
