I'm not a fan of Pea's style. It clearly worked for him, he's an amazing talent, but it was like some kind of "drunken master" style. I love watching Canelo. He uses his head and upper body perfectly. Doesn't mock or taunt, doesn't rely on bing on the rope and using his shoulders to take a blow, and it's pleasing to watch. Your turn...
Benton and Benitez are 2 styles I really appreciate and like to watch them both. As for aggressive guys I like Duran Frazier and Chavez also Norton
I like the technical guys, with blocking, parries and brilliant fundamentals. Guys like Canto, Watson, Charles, Penalosa etc.
Defensive styles like Canto, Kalambay, Toney, Starling, Lora, Zapata, Nunn, Wright, Rigo, Guzman, Calderon, Benitez, Pep and Sweet Pea are what I really appreciate. Currently I enjoy seeing Canelo and Loma’s defensive display.
Duran is tops for me. His defense includes shades of Benton inside countering but also Ali’s slipping ability. The added bonus was that he was a standard boxer behind the jab but aggressive with feinting and ducking and fluid countering. He forced you to punch so he could counter but if you didn’t punch he didn’t wait...he came and hit you..to force you to punch...so on and so on. No once else was as fluid at this. I just want to mention Peps footwork and Pernells pivoting. Pep seemed to me to be the brilliant kid who was the best a tag. You thought you had him yet he make a subtle move and you just about fall. Also like Barry Sanders...he was just close to enough to touch but by the time you made up your mind he was gone...then back in front of you to hit you...then gone. Pernells pivoting skills are what made him beautiful to me. He was flatfooted. His perfect southpaw jab was all he really needed. He lands it, you want to attack..he senses it, and pivots, ducks, slips...then jabs again. It’s always seems to start with the pivot for the sake of the angle. Once he has the angle, he makes you turn to punch and once he makes you miss he focus’ his whole concentration on making you miss more...then the almighty jab is back. These are my giants.
I’ve always loved the shell guys ..,Marlon Starling , Winky Wright , Ike Quartey, Livingston Bramble , ....I’m sure I’m in the minority lol
You’re not alone, I like fighters that use the high guard defense. Starling and Wright were one of the best at it. Quartey, Azumah Nelson, Dariusz Michalczwewski, Glen Johnson, and Joshua Clottey also has good shell defense too.
Tbh, I've a soft spot for the angry ones who just use their faces to break and **** up fists through sheer punishment. Canto, Benitez, Pea etc are ok enough if you're into the highly skilled, technical shite that takes years to learn and is highly pleasing and wankable for hipsters. They're no Sung-Kil Moon though, I think we can all agree. Occams Razor/shaver of the defensive masters.
