Hello gentlemen; I'm seeking your opinion on the favourites to take Gold (or any other medals) in Rio 2016. I don't follow amateur boxing currently, but I'm eager to start and just was wondering who are the current favourites/most skilful fighters to keep an eye on in the lead up to Rio. Please state nationality and weight of the fighter mentioned, thanks in advance & I look forward to hearing your opinions. Weight classes: Light Flyweight (49kg/ 108lbs) Flyweight (52kg/ 114lbs) Bantamweight (56kg/ 123lbs) Lightweight (60kg/ 132lbs) Light welterweight (64kg/ 140lbs) Welterweight (69kg/ 151lbs) Middleweight (75kg/ 165lbs) Light heavyweight (81kg/ 178lbs) Heavyweight (91kg/ 200lbs) Super heavyweight (+91kg/ +200lbs)
Cheers Gramsey. Is Savon the guy who fought Anthony Joshua at London 2012? I remeber a guy called Savon giving Joshua the run around before a hometown decision saw him through... I see Ireland are being tipped for greatness. Incredible boxing talent for such a small nation.
The Irish guys are more likely to turn over then the Cubans and some Russian/Eastern European guys? Paddy Barnes has won two Bronze Olympic medals, so surely he'll be turning over after Rio? He'll be 29 by the time the games come around.
He's said in the past he's received no good offers. He is a flyweight so as good as he might be, he's never going to be a mega star outside of Ireland. Rumours abound from my old coach as well that some of the boxers on the High Performance program in Ireland are on up to 80,000 a year. I think that would remove a lot of financial incentive to turn pro at flyweight.
That's not bad at all, you would wonder if he could link up with Cyclone though. I mean Frampton's undercards are absolute garbage usually, someone like Barnes would be an attraction from a skill perspective, he'd be better than a lot of the guys on currently, and obviously would have title aspirations. Easy to go up through the weights down there also.
