I don't think Ali was in on it, to be honest. There is no way Liston was knocked out, though, either physically or technically.

    I agree. Liston lay down.

First fight..no fix...Liston hit Ali with huge hooks in rounds 2 and 3...wouldnt have thrown them if trying to lose..Listons age and more importantly inactivity caught up with him...He had never met a fighter with Ali's speed height power and endurance combined.
Second fight Liston lay down..100% certain. Nobody will ever know for sure , why.?

I recently rewatched the first fight. I definitely do not think Sonny tanked it. I forgot how many bombs Liston launched at Ali.

This story does the rounds every few years. It is the stuff of legends by now and nobody will ever conclusively prove anything, one way or the other.

I think we might find out. There are still a few people around who know what happened in those fights. They're way up in years. A lot of people talk when they get close to the end.
Dundee, before he died, admitted that Liston did not intentionally blind Clay. He said the story was nonsense. I wish he had told us more, but he didn't.

True. But very old people come out with some pretty odd stuff, and some of it needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

Angelo's book My View From The Corner is a fabulous read - you have probably got a copy. But if you haven't. Make it a priority.

I agree. Liston looked disillusioned in the second fight but the officiating was farcical. Sonny never got a count and it should not have been waved off. The referee can stop a time keeper count for as long as he likes. He does not have to pick up his count. It starts when the fighter is in a neutral corner. A fighter is only obliged to get up to beat a count. Sonny never got one!

As I've said before ,Dundee NEVER said that Liston intentionally tried to blind Ali.

Dundee said in his book that Liston did indeed hurt his shoulder, that the Liston corner were rubbing some ointment or other on it and that that's what got into Ali's eyes.

But others have said Liston's corner used this trick against Zora Folley. I am reading a book about Sonny at the moment by Rob Steen. Just coming up to the first fight with Clay/Ali. I don't know if there was anything untoward about the first fight, but with Sonny's connections you never know. Let's put it this way, given a choice between the flamboyant Ali and Sonny Liston, who do you think the boxing big boys would prefer?

Also, it said in the book that Chris Dundee, (along with Angelo) had a cosy dinner with Frankie Carbo before the fight. This may have been perfectly innocent, of course, but there is just something about those times in boxing that makes me wonder.
