Joe Calzaghe has been taking a lot of criticism despite winning last weekend. Mostly on the subject of his punching power. I've watched Calzaghe since he won the British Title so I know that if you take into account his whole career then he can't be described as feather fisted. Are there any champions or top contenders you can think off who had limited power?
Paulie Malignaggi is pretty feather-fisted ... even though he blames it on his hands being fragile, I think it's just the only excuse he thinks would work.
But he's not feather-fisted, though. He knocked down Barrera, and Barrera isn't easy to put down!:hey Feather-fisted Derrick Gainer fought JMM years ago, and for some reason this is the third time today I've referenced that fight. But Gainer was, and will always be, feather-fisted.
I think you're missing the point of the thread here. Juan Manuel Marquez had Pacman wobbled in their second fight, and has 35 knockouts to his name. El Dinamita is anything but feather-fisted. Paulie Malignaggi is feather-fisted.
Oh another one would be Harry Greb, Boxrec.com has his record of 260 w/ 48 KOs (still alot) - 21 Ls - 17 Draws/NCs...he has more fights than that though. He was more of a 'punches in bunches' fighter than a KO artist....but he would still beat the hell out of somebody due to the amount of punches he'd land - and he broke Jack Dempsey's nose in sparring for the Dempsey/Tunney fight.
Ali didnt have much in the way of power. But in his prime, he could hit you you 6 times before you thought about hitting him.
Markus Beyer? I didn't get to see much of him, but he was an entertaining guy who didn't seem to have much power or coordination, but ended up winning fights in altogether bizarre situations.:huh
Pernell Whitaker wasn't a big puncher either...a good boxer but not God-gifted in the power department, even though he knocked down De La Hoya which probably still haunts the Golden Boy to this day...making him wear women's underwear and all. But Whitaker's power was also diminshed as he went up in weight.
jmm knocked down barrera? :huh it was the other way around. marquez does punch hard due to great technique and timing. but barrera, morales and pacman do have more punching power than him.
What do u mean by feather fisted? How about Clinton woods he has 41 fights and 24 Kos evreytime i watch him he never seems to have the power to finish of his opponents or really trouble them in fights, most of his opponents who were kod started at the begining of his career fighting journey men but against tough opponenets his power is some what overrated, he is a champion but not regarded fo huge punching power!
