Abe just splits opinions down the middle; you either (like me) think he was for real, and rate him real high, or you think he was a fraud and do not have him in your top 30 126lbers, let alone top ten!
Sorry to disagree,I have no problem rating Attell in the top 10 ,,he was certainly no fraud,my problem is rating him above Driscoll. I have Driscoll at no 4 ,Attell at 7. Abe threw fights and carried boxers,he was very skilled and could tough it out when needed, but his eye was allways on the dollar, his part in the fixing of the World Series is well documented.
Really hard 1 - Sandy Saddler 2 - Henry Armstrong 3 - Willie Pep 4 - Salvador Sanchez 5 - Kid Chocolate 6 - Jim Driscoll 7 - Abe Attell 8 - Manny Pacquaio 9 - Terry McGovern 10 - George Dixon Dundee, Pedroza, Arguello, Barerra, Nelson, Saldivar, Arguello, Moore, Ramos, Canzoneri, Moran could all be in that top 10
1 Manny Pacquiao 2 Willie Pep 3 Henry Armstrong 4 Sandy Saddler 5 Abe Attell 6 Sal Sanchez 7 Alexis Arguello 8 Jim Driscoll 9 Marco Antonio Barrera 10 Kid Chocolate
It's my pleasure. It's been a good learning experience for me, too. It's given me a chance to do a lot of my own research on a lot of these guys and has also generated some very interesting in-thread discussions, IMO. :good Likewise, I would like to thank everyone who has participated, particularly those of you who have done so regularly. All in all, I think the collective lists have been pretty solid.
I can see argument's for including Pacquiao in the top ten. Personally, I did not rate him and I think number one is a bit high primarily because Pac's body of work was thin at that weight class. But his win over Barrera was something else, and MAB was the man in the division at that time. But a win over MAB and a draw with JMM--are those enough to justify the number one spot? Or a top 10? I don't think so. I was actually considering placing MAB at #10 on my list, but ultimately opted against it.
I was glad to see Davey Moore's name on this list as he was a great little featherweight. However poor Davey didn't get the chance to retire as was mentioned here. He died after losing his championship to Sugar Ramos in a brutal battle in which Moore gave as good as he took. This fight was only a year after the tragic Benny "Kid" Paret death in the ring that was seen on national television. I well remember as I watched that fight. Being 13 years old at the time it made a lasting impression on me and although I have always enjoyed watching boxing these two fights were eye openers for me and made me think alot less of the fight "game" ever since.
Sorry, that was an unfortunate use of words and i should have known better. Still, he was a good little fighter at the weight and he built a good legacy. It is very sad to remember the tragic end.
