Fedor bashing

I agree. What is worse is that casual MMA fans (UFC nuthuggers) will never watch old PRIDE fights and see how great he was. They look to Dana for thier cue to bash what they can't understand. They do not realize that NOTHING even close to Fedor's caliber and legarcy has graced the UFC octogon.

 

What Fedor did till 2005 will never be repeated again but people ignore what he has done the last 5 years which is nothing special.

So I ask what is Fedors best win since CC in 2006?

Jim needs to get his facts straight. The UFC is the sport's biggest stage now. Well, I've never checked ratings in the early 2000's, but I do know that the money was in Pride then. The better fighters were in Pride because they paid more. Fedor lost after spending the better part of a decade of beating the sport's best, is what he should have said.

Yes, but why do so many people ignore what he has done since leaving Pride? He took the easy road and milked it for all it was worth. And seeing him in the ring with guys like Werdum and Silva just shows what would happen if he fought cain,Dos,Overeem, etc.

 

Milking the easy road? I see what you are saying, but I don't believe those were his intentions. I don't believe he was ducking the best.

The UFC negotiations fell through the first time because the UFC didn't want Fedor to compete in Combat Sambo tournaments. Remember, at the time of those negotiations, Fedor wasn't that far removed from top level competition. Fedor was considered by the knowing mma world as the best heavyweight in the world. The UFC had purchased Pride, or the rights to Pride, or however that worked. The UFC wanted Fedor as their champion, or his scalp for their champion. The UFC's best heavies were Sylvia and Arlovski around this time. Mir had been injured. Than Couture comes along and dominates Sylvia. Couture tried to leave the UFC to fight Fedor. Couture seemed like the UFC's biggest threat to Fedor, and Fedor seemed to want that fight as well. It fell through.

After Pride, Fedor faced Lindland in a meaningless fight. Then he faced Choi in a circus type fight. Fedor went for a meaningful fight with Couture. Then Fedor faced Sylvia and Arlovski, which were still highly rated at that time. Fedor also tried to face Barnett, but that fell apart as well.

We got all the way to 2010 before the next UFC negotiation fell through. Couture and Barnett would have been winable fights for Fedor, and would have made his resume even better. I don't think Fedor set out to duck anyone.

Honestly, the truth is that there simply aren't the same number of great heavyweight fighters in MMA as there are at the other weights. It's the same in boxing. That's just the reality of things - the bigger guys are, the less likely they are to possess the athletic ability to do what the smaller guys can do.

 

Who has come close to what he has done? Especially being a very small heavyweight. Fedor cemented his legacy by 2005. Everything from then on was gravy. The ONLY reason his status was even debated was because of Dana White!!! Even his OWN fighters and commentators like Rogan recognized Fedor as being the best in the world. Dana planted a seed and it took root with people denying the facts.

 

I'm most annoyed that people say Fedor just can't keep up with these "new era" heavyweights.

Now it's pretty obvious that for Jim Rome UFC = MMA. It's been said countless times that the UFC has the best fighters in every division but the Heavy's.

On paper, the top 5 UFC HW vs the top 5 SF HW would be pretty good matchups. Velasquez and Dos Santos are the only two UFC HW I'd bet on to win vs top SF HW.

It doesn't sound too wrong to me. Fedor weighs around 230, while a lot of heavy's now cut down to 265. I'm sure he can keep up with them but he has to train harder and get bigger. He's fighting the new era of huge monsters while he's still the same unchanged Fedor that we have always seen.

 

I think its a myth that most heavyweights are cutting to 265Ibs...the only ones I can think of are Silva and Lesnar. Carwin cut from 270+ at UFC116 but that was after a very misjudged attempt to bulk up to match Lesnar's strength. Carwin's optimum weight is probably closer to 255Ibs.

But yeah if he started out today Fedor would almost certainly be a light heavyweight. His frame is not naturally that of a heavyweight...not just in terms of weight but also height and reach. I actually that's the best place for him to go now...Henderson/Fedor would be cool.

 

I'm more of a mainstream fan of MMA but watching Fedor get beat like that was sad. Its like watching Tyson go down.
