Fedor the great has now 17 defences of the heavyweight MMA title.....could he one day surpass joe Louis 25 boxing defenses?
Different sport. That im pretty sure is a achievement that will NEVER be surpassed in the history of MMA.
yeah totally different sport...i mean there's so many ****ing upsets that defending your belt twice in mma is already a bigger deal than it is for boxing.. That's why some people are often innocently asking why couture is so huge in this sport even though his record is 16-9.. (hard to understand when compared to your average boxing champ's record )
Defiantly. There much more ways to skin a cat in MMA. To be honest a .500 record might not be an indication of that much. Aka Kevin Randleman..
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think most of the fights he fought in Pride after he got the title weren't for the title. Fight like Zulu, Hong definitely werent. Out of all those fights the title fights were Hunt Nog and Crocop i believe. So technically its a lot less then 17.
you're absolutely correct...yes , for example his fight vs zulu was not "for the belt"...zulu wasn't fighting as a contender , the belt wasn't on the line. Gomi also had fights like that...i can't remember which one but he once lost a fight (his belt wasn't on the line)...and all fans were bitching about the fact that his opponent should've taken the belt (since he defeated the champ afterall)... or maybe it was some other fighter i don't know... but anyway , they used to have these types of fights in japan... in fedor's case though..the most impressive fact is that he left all the organisations he had to fight in...with all the belts... that's how he got his nickname "the last emperor"....from the "rings" era...because he left with the belts , then he did the same with pride fc...
True but i was thinking along the lines of Combat sport more than anything hence the reason i put MMA and boxing for both guys. Just trying to think who achieved greater Fedor or Joe?
yeah i think MMA is in its infancy.....in fact you could compare MMA to like boxing in the past century around the teens or 20s......a growing sport etc with records having high losses. If you were to take like the first 10 fighters of every top level operator in the game then you get more of a feel for wins to loss record. Hatto and Calazghe come to mind when there records make it out that they are better than they actually are.
Well everytime he steps into the ring he defending the tag of being the best MMA fighter in the world......if he losses lets say to Hong then he would have lost his number 1 spot without doubt etc. If you look at boxing.........Joe Louis, L. Holmes etc defended many times but against fighters that wernt exactly top notch.
nah.. the nature of the sport makes it way too hard to compare. 1 - size of the gloves (not to mention cuts are way easier with these types of gloves) 2 - elbows are allowed..(again , easy cuts..) 3 - knees are also allowed..(on the ground & of course in the clinch) 4 - suplexes , judo throws .. not the type of **** you'll see in boxing 5 - wrestling , Jiujitsu , sambo , judo , kickboxing etc..too many different ways to attack your opponent.. it's no wonder upsets are extremely common in mma.... Another detail...Unlike boxing was (back in the 20's or even earlier)...MMA has already advanced to the next stage even though it isn't as old as boxing yet. Not only is mma one of the fastest growing sports...but the sport already has specimens who are for the most part extremely versatile. (gsp , anderson , Kawajiri , Yamamoto , Penn , Hansen , Faber , Barnett , Henderson , Kharitonov , Overeem etc....) There was no such thing as a guy like Sudo or hell even Gonzaga back when Royce Gracie was owning everyone in the ufc.. Even Matt hughes (who's rather one dimensional when compared to Penn) was light years ahead compared to Royce (when both had to fight)...it was royce's major reality check...and he learned the hard way it wasn't possible to beat someone with bjj only... (except when your name is Shinya Aoki )...(of course Royce was past his prime but still.. it's also one of the realities in today's competition...guys Like Tank Abbott don't have a chance in hell to be part of the top 10 , or 20 , 30 etc...lol we keep fond memories of these guys..some classic moments ..but i mean there's a huge ****ing gap beteen the royce era with the gsp era... the real problem with this sport is the multitude of ways in which you can hit , submit , throw your opponent..that's why there'll always be tons of upsets no matter what.
nah........read it again. Boxing in the gloved era started late century with John L Sullivan.....but we then got great fighters who came after him Jeffries, Johnson, Dempsey. Talking about the possibilty of more upsets is pointless.......i wasnt referring to that at all. I agree MMA has already gone onto the next level far removed from early 90s (era 1) and late 90s early 00s (era 2) Hence why i said MMA is like that boxing in the late teens early 20s... regardless.......my main thing i believe Fedor has 17 defences which is very impressive. to be the man you need to be the man....he beat Nog in 03.....but still exiitng times for MMA in the future.
Again...........i didnt say MMA is boxing or the reverse....just comparing the two Major Combats sports. MMA is moving quickly.......the fighters now are starting to look awesome. You need to be at least a B+ in wrestling, bjj, boxing, kickboxing to actually be an elite now. Boxing was my first passion.....i love it........but the sport has gotten soft.......to many fighters coming out of shape, not enough fights a year, etc.....im hoping the rise of MMA makes boxing wake from ts deep deep sleep. One day though.....if MMA still alive......we shall see a boxer with the standup of a Tyson, and the ground stuff from Fedor. Cant wait
