Two notes of consequence or perhaps inconsequence. First off; Zulu was a purple belt when Fedor Zulu'd him. Second off; BJJ is basically a tailor made grappling style that is constantly evolving to meet the demands of sport grappling and MMA. It is a simple matter of econonmics. More time and money is put into the evolution of BJJ with it's growing participation throughout North America and Western Europe. It is extremely difficult for public sector clubs in Russia to evolve their SAMBO when participation, interest and economics dictate otherwise. Even the way leg attacks are currently being performed/developed have evolved beyond the point where SAMBO left off. Intrepid souls have taken the great qualities in SAMBO leg attacks and advanced/evolved them to furthur compliment the sport grappling/MMA scene. Anyone who trains at a reputable grappling academy will be aware of this. I have no doubt that the military applications of SAMBO are still far superior. However when it comes to sport grappling and MMA, the practicioners are fighting an uphill battle. In fact, it is impressive that they do as well as they do. A testiment to Russian fortitude.
You talk about BJJ evolving while discounting that Sambo has also evolved. From the very beginning, Sambo was a sport that evolved from many other forms.
Of course you are correct. Actually, I love SAMBO! All I was saying is that BJJ/grappling has been tailor made for success in current fight sports. This is due to it's growth and the amounts of money pumped into it, mainly within the US. Nothing personal at all against SAMBO...
