fedor is the goat but is he the current # 1 ?

In my world the guy who won overtakes loser in rankings. Everything else is up for debate.

I guess you have real deal Holyfield, as current number 1 heavyweight boxer

first, I have to state that their is no heavyweight rankings that are irrefutable, in fact none even come close imo (including my own list of course) and I believe it will take some time before the rankings become solidified.

werdum is the best person I can think of to fit the #1 spot, with his HUGE win over fedor and before that a solid win over antonio silva who else deserves the top spot above fedor?

fedor gets the #2 spot because he has come off a loss and has not looked as dominate in his previous fight (brett rogers) before the loss to werdum. though his legendary career dominance and resume IMO keeps him from falling more than 1 spot. contrarily, lesnars loss with with a resume lacking of legitimate substance, falls farther(personally, I never had lesnar as the #1 or #2 ranked heavyweight because I felt while he was dangerous lesnar was largely untested.)

cain velasquez is on a good run. the newly crowned ufc champion has proven himself in some areas but still has much to prove against dangerous competition.

overeem does not have a solid resume at heavyweight but has looked stellar against the competition he has faced and even though it has little bearing on mma has looked much improved in K1 their is even a possibility that he can win the gp. striking as you know is a part of mma and has some significance in his mma potential which I am factoring in to the rankings here especially since he is not a newcomer to the mma scene and has displayed his skills at lhw and seems to be an improved version at hw, just how much remains to be seen.

Josh barnett may seem out of place to some at #6 but his last loss was in 2006 just a few short years ago I had Josh ranked at #3 heavyweight behind Fedor and big Nog since then his strikes against him are the level of competition he has fought in the last few years and the infrequency in which he has fought them. Barnett in my eyes has not shown a real decline in ability, isn't too old (turns 33 later this month), has well rounded skills and has been tested in the past. he will also be tested skill wise and for banned substances when he finally fights for strikforce.

Shane carwin has really proven to be more hype than anything else far more than lesnar. Can you belive he gassed in the 2nd round really he gassed at the end of the first round and was never able to get his wind back. I think if in his next fight he reveals an significant improvement of increased stamina we can take him seriously again. I wont hold my breath:yep

 

I see your point, but like I said...IMO even if you beat the man..Some people just get lucky. If he'd have obliterated Fedor I'd say either Fedor is a shell of his former self, or Werdum was seriously the best. Fact is he didn't though, and although he knew what he was doing, he did get lucky at how things fell in to place.
I just can't rank somebody as #1 HW in the world whenever I view them as just getting lucky, and having quite a few losses, and the only thing good about there game is on the ground.
I rank somebody overall based on wins, and how well they won, skill, defeats, and how they looked in defeat. Way to many variables than Guy A beats Guy B, and takes his spot as the best.
I do see your guys point though, but I think you should take more in to consideration. And Fedor is a little more active than Holyfield , and also in a lot better shape.

2. Fedor (former undisputed, long history only drops him to #2)
3. Cain (big win over Brock, impressive performances)
4. JDS (long winning streak, impressive performances)
5. Brock (bad performance drops him below JDS)
6. Carwin (almost beat Brock and beat Mir)
7. Overeem (long winning streak but against weak opposition + impressive kickboxing results add to his 'potential')
8. Mir (only on here because he beat a faded Nog two years ago)
9. Barnett (this just shows how shallow the division is, long winning streak but against cans, living off the past but wins this year got him ranked again)
10. A.Silva (not proven much but better then most)

 

I'd say it's Overeem. Cain is close but I just don't see anyone winning Alistair at the moment.

 

Come on, let's drop the idea of a "lucky submission"

There is far to much involved in a sub to have it be considered lucky.

Nobody wins a fight without their opponent doing something other than absolutely perfect.

 

Could've just said "no one is perfect"...

But anyways, speaking for myself, but when I say Werdum got a lucky submission I mean to say that out of 100 fights, the submission he got might appear only couple of times against Fedor. Considering Werdum probably wins 1 maybe 2 fights out of 10 vs Fedor, I consider that submission a lucky one.

 

There is nothing lucky about Werdum's submission of Fedor. That was application of studied technique. I'm sure Fedor won't make the same mistake again - but what if Werdum catches him in a different submission next time?

Thats true but equally JDS didnt really show dominance over Werdum either, just finished him quickly. Those two fights show exactly why "MMAth" is looked down on since Dos Santos never had to enguage Werdum on the ground or consistantly stuff his takedown atempts.

What does Fedor losing to Werdum tell us about his chances vs JDS? very little since Junior could almost definately not win in a similar fashion to Werdum.
