Little bit of a backstory, been training for about 6 months and was looking to start competing ASAP. I've had some trouble in the past with my back so I went to see an osteopath twice in the last two fortnights. She said my spine was slightly curved and to work on posture and get a better computer chair and it should level itself out. She said I'd be OK to go back to training so I was pretty happy. Went back for my first session on Monday and I felt my back tighten up again about half way through but not to a level that I would have to stop. On Tuesday it was very sore but I thought it was only because it was my first time back in the gym for a month. Woke up today and it's even worse, I'm struggling to walk properly with it tbh. I've got a massage booked on Friday but I'm worried that my back might never be 'right' enough to train and fight properly. I Don't want to sound arrogant or anything but I know that if I train hard enough I could have a good career in boxing but I'm worried that might not happen because of my back. Not really sure why I'm posting it here but I guess I just need to get it off of my chest as it's really not a nice feeling. Any kind of advice/comments are welcome!
Was the osteo a sports specialist? Might be worth hunting out an osteo who has experience of working with boxers. Changing posture is a slow process and is more than just changing a compute chair. Did the osteo give you any exercises to do to help correct your posture? Iyengar yoga can help with posture and body strengthing, though it is demanding and would involve a commitment to achieve any benefits. Did the osteo tell you what type of curvature you had in the spine? Basically the spine has two natural curves. The lower back (lumbar spine) has an inward curve and the upper back (thoracic area) has a slight outward curve. There are basically three causes for postural deformaties. Congenital- you were born that way. Enviromental- sitting are standing incorrectly causes damage to the spine. (Iyengar yoga helps reeducate the body). Traumatic - an injury has caused the problem. Kyphosis is an exaggerated outward curvature of the spine. Usually someone would look round shouldered. Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine. Usually someone would hold one shoulder higher than the other. If there are no underlying traumatic injuries to the spine then a focused strength training can help. A good osteo should be able to advise on what measures need to be taken to help the problem. If the training being done is leading to aggrevation of the problem, then the training needs to be modified. Lordosis is an exggerated inward curvature of the spine. Usually someone would look pot bellied.
She said it was towards the bottom end of the spine, closer to the ass. She asked me about old injuries which I had but didn't specifically state that it could have been one of them. Said it could possibly have been caused by weight training when I was younger. I'll get the massage done on Friday and try to train a day or two after. If it still feels bad then I'll look into a sports specialist Osteo. She did recommend some specific stretching to do and showed me some good books which had some in. Also recommended some core strength exercies as well as doing yoga or pilates Thanks alot for the advice mate :good
dont take back advice online. you need to see appropriate specialists. i also box with back problems. i constantly have pain in my back and also through the backs of my legs. i train very hard, and wake up sore every day from the training and also my job. however, the fitter i have become and the better core strength i have had, the less acute pain ive had in my back. you have been training for a bit now, so if you're training hard enough & you think youre conditioned well enough.. maybe you need to pursue the medical path. as far as im aware massage wont repair your back. only bring relief.
i used to get a pain in the bottom right of my back it was really tight and sharp pain its totally gone now though i guess i just had to build up the muscles.. now i have a terrible shoulder problem instead lol
Went for a massage today and it's feeling a bit better already. I think I was just a bit down the other day as it was after my first session back and I picked up the injury pretty much straight away. Hopefully it will be ok to get back in the gym as soon as possible.
Not that many of you will care but I saw my doctor on Friday & I've got an x-ray on my back tomorrow morning. She mentioned three different things it could be which were Sciatica, Spondylosis or Marfans Syndrome. If it's Marfans, I'm completely & utterly ****ed.
Well first off you haven't been following the osteopaths advice for long, these things take time so dont jump to conclusions that your ****ed. If you give up on your back now you will be ****ed given time...follow the advice and watch yourself slowly improve.
Cheers for the messages & things lads, means alot. I've been doing the stretches that the osteopath recommended but on some occasions it's very painful. Also the backs of my legs were burning really badly when doing some. Did one yesterday & I felt something shoot up my back & the left side of my face started to tingle for a while
Go see a doctor, you could have a herniated disk... dont want to scare you or anything, but make sure you check it out to avoid any serious issues.
do push ups lots of push ups, every day. after a month or 2 your back will be better. i found push ups help with back pain, they strengthen the back.
