For the last few weeks I've done nothing but focus on right jab/left straight combo. Trying to bring it out as quick as possible while still properly pivoting my foot and rotating my hip into it. I also combined this with fighting backwards while hitting the pads. Traded in sparring sessions for doing the combination on the bag. I noticed my left straight started to become stronger and have a bigger impact on the bag.

Now I had my first serious sparring session today (Rest was mostly against girls because they had nobody else while I was working the bag<_<) in like a month against someone who used to counter me a lot. I removed hooks and uppercuts from my game plan unless I know 100% sure it will land clean and not leave me open. Anyway, not once was I countered. I kept distracting him with the jab which I now manage to throw at a constant speed and when he was so focused on my jab I threw a straight to the gut. Once he started anticipating that, I made the left to the gut a left to the head and just kept mixing up body and head.

Second round he came out more agressive and I could just fight on the outside since I have a pretty big reach for my height. I got a bit too confident and tried fighting orthodox (I'm a southpaw) and got caught by a hook, whichj was the only big hit he got on me.

Now I'm gonna work on improving my hook technique, I can generate a lot of power but my motion is way too wide, so it's really unpractical, any tips?

Good work. Really. Every trainer tells their guy to box smart, but you did it.
