just watching bernard hopkins - behind the glory and theres about 5 minutes of all the main hbo figures purely wanking on about fees and how much money he could of got for the roy jones fight. **** the money, i dont give a ****, theyre both rich, i care about the fight. no real mention of what could have happened or whatever just went straight onto getting all over excited about his fees for the dlh fight its just ******ed, and you see people on here saying 'pacquaio should demand 60%' and the other way 'mayweather should clearly get more' about their fight, why do they care how much extra millions these multi millionaires get :huh its just giving fighters excuses not to make these fights more legitimacy Id like to see a governing body have a determind % go to the winner, but the fighters would just abandon it and nobody would care
It's worth mentioning because years later when you want to know who's fault it is that the fight (which is what we all care about) didn't get made. The money is a valid discussion. Bernard could have made about $6 million to avenge the only loss on his record that anyone really gave a **** about at that point. Instead he chose to fight a bum for 1.2 million dollars.
I agree 100% with ALL of this post. Fans, fighters & anyone related to boxing that keep bringing up this money **** rather than discussing the actual fights are the pieces of **** that are destroying the sport, makes me sick to the pit of my stomach TBH.
Another thing.... that Hopkins-RJJ scenario that happened regarding money was probably the most embarassing thing Ive seen in all my yrs watching boxing, absolutely cringe worthy, both guys should hang their head in shame even today for that rematch not being made almost a decade ago. Words cant properly describe my feelings on that subject, I just pray I dont have to witness it again in another p4p mega clash (FMJ-Pac ?)
So you think that Barnard should get a pass for turning down a career high payday and a chance at redemption to fight a nobody for 1/6 of what he would have made? He brought up the money and you don't think that it's fair for a fan to call him on the bull**** becuase we shouldn't be discussing money?
Well Criticism of fighters not making fights for being ridiculous over the money is different to what I meant really, theres nothing wrong with that because the not making the fights is the problem I mean all the prefight discussions over fees, the sort of glamourizing it gets a lot of the time, and then media and fans weighing in with who they think should get the bigger % its a circus and its a bit pathetic, look at hatton pacquaio or wlad haye recently the negotiations were making more boxing headlines and discussion than any actual fights going on
Jones knew what was coming to him in that rematch that is why he did not take the fight. The guy knew he had a very good chance of getting his Glass Jaw shattered. Look at the bums Roy was fighting during that time period. It was a joke.
I agree that percentages are bull****, why the **** should I care if the other guy is getting $3 million if I'm getting whatever I wanted(even if it's considerably less). Fees are important, this sport is a business after all and fighters have to make a living. However I'm not a fan of a fighter wanting 51%, or a 60-40 split. Just get whatever money they want out of it and don't care what the other guy gets. Percentages seem more like a dick waving contest than actually being about money. I swear some fighters would take less money if it means getting a higher percentage.
Like hopkins in the RJJ fight. 1.2 mil to fight Carl ****ing Daniels vs $6 mil to redeem a loss in a mega fight.
This content is protected I get sick to death when so-called "real fight fans" tell me my favorite fighter doesn't deserve a shot at certain champs because he doesn't draw the amount of PPV's. We all understand that boxing is a business, but are you a fan of boxing, or a fan of boxing business? If you are a fan of boxing, then you would love nothing more than to see the best boxers fight the best boxers, regardless of how much of a media frenzy and PPV circus they can stir up. I swear, some of these people who justify their guy not taking fights because their "too risky" is the exact thing that takes away from the sport. They get so wrapped up in how their favorite fighter can protect his career and save up for the "big fight" that they don't give a **** about seeing who the best in the division is anymore.
They have to bring it up to let fans know that money is what keeps these guys going, legacy and a few unknowns praising them won't pay their bills when they're too old to continue fighting or if they die in the ring.
Completely agree. It surprises me when fans say so-and-so doesn't deserve a big fight because he "can't draw". Why should any of us give a ****? I realise why managers, promoters etc worry about all of this but I honestly couldn't care less. I just want to see the best fight each other, regardless of how many ppv's they have a record of attracting.
I am all for these guys getting paid... But noone is asking them to fight for free. If a well-deserving unknown wants to fight a well-deserved superstar, they should get it done. They will get paid good money. They might not see the $10M - $20M purse, but if they truly desrve it, they will get what's coming to them down the road. You don't have to protect your career to get the big money... You have to fight the big fighters and be a part of history, and people will want to see you fight others...:good And for the record, I ain't necessarily pickin on Floyd, cause he is DEFINITELY not the only one. He ain't even the worst offender in my book.
