savon was a supremely skilled boxer with good power (not as good as Lewis's tho) and a fantastic chin (much better than Lewis's). The age argument doesnt really wash with me as when he was a kid himself he became world and olympic champion.

I think he would have been a really good pro boxer and it would be a 50 50 between him and Lewis.

6'8 is huge. Perhaps the tallest boxer ever who can actually box.

    He was 6-8?

How come he was at heavyweight and not superheavyweight in the olympics?

Loops like he won the heavy gold in 1996 while Wladimir K won the superheavy gold.

It would have been cool if they fought.

    How much did he weigh?

You would think they would be in the same weight division, being his 6-8 and Wlad is what 6-6?

    Was he ducking Wlad?:hey

Something doesnt add up, he had to be under 91kg, thats only 200 lbs.

He was 6-8 and under 200 pounds?

Even in 2000 when he was 33 years old he was under 200 lbs.

I cant see him beating Lennox in the pros, Lennox had a good 20-40 lbs on him. Also keep in mind he was much older and experienced than the other amature competition. I am sure Lennox could have easily defeated all the other amatures when he was in his late 20s and had more experience than them as well.

Also, Cuban amateurs are basically pro fighters anyway. They are treated relatively well, and train rigorously and because of that had good sparring opposition, etc. Also, people forget that Savon's biggest weakness was his chin and defense. He was very fast, strong and powerful though. Difficult to say how things would have panned out, I would favour Lewis though.

In fact I very much disagree, because like I said that's simply not the reason for Savon's success. He beat those guys not because he was older and they were supposedly "pre prime" (btw more than often he wasn't older than those supposedly pre prime superheros) or because he was more experienced, he beat them because he was the more talented fighter. A great young fighter will mostly beat an older great fighter. It's simply the nature of amateur boxing, consistency like Savon's is extremly rare.

That's because 90% of the succesful amateur boxers turn professional. You can be pretty sure that if , say, Ray Leonard or Ali remained amateurs that they could've won another olympic or two. Especially considering the 2nd and 3rd time it's a mature fighter vs young green fighter, often.

I don't know that Savon will win but he surely would atleast rock Lennox a few times. I can also see both guys tasting the canvas...

It'll be hard to draw up but I see it going to the scorecards in favor of Lennox.

But the decision will be close -

I see Savon having just as much star power as Lennox if he ever went pro.

I think its foolish to assume that just because Savon was a legendary amateur boxer, that he would be able to beat a legendary professional boxer.

Also while some of Savon's amateur wins are very impressive, you have to consider that many times in his career he was fighting fighters FAR younger and more inexperienced than himself.
