get off that age **** -- I think fundamentally Savon wouldve gotten himself to a world title shot atleast.
Exactly, & good point too. There's no telling if Savon would've been anything special in the pros based soley on his amateur success.
Hey Savon beat Ibragimov who was a fully grown man at the time He beat Lamon Brewster who was grown He beat Shannon Briggs who was grown
Judging from Savon's amateur career I can only guess that he had all the tools to become a great champ in pros. He was very good in the areas which are very important in professional boxing - speed, power, strength, movement, reach. His opponents in the amateurs were all wearing headgear and Savon was KOing them anyway. Lewis vs Savon ? Lewis wasn't perfect so Savon could've beaten him. I say Savon was more talented.
sorry, i mean the games of 88, cuba did not attend those games, thats why savon won his first gold medal at age 25, if he cuba would have won to the 88 games, he could have won 4 by 2000
If Castro wasn't such a dictator then maybe we'll be talking a different tune about Savon. Not a guy who was gaining points like traditional cuban fighters he was KOing guys as well -- within 4 rounds even.
Great amateur does not equal great pro. And for the record I am at least as big a fan of Amateur boxing as I am pro boxing. Can't be bothered reading the whole thread, but if it hasn't been pointed out yet, Savon was not some invincible destroyer. He lost to plenty of fighters, some of them more than once, and some who went on to become journeymen pros.
Juan Causse (twice) Urslan Arsalijev Dal Chen Li Freddy Rojas Ruslan Chagaev Odlanier Solis (twice) Radim Marovski Noel Perez Bio Michael Bennett .....
He never lost to Bennett. He had a lot of fights in amateurs. There's never been any ameteur with 200+ fights without a loss.
Oh yes he did. He beat Bennett in the Olympics in 2000, but he lost to him in the World Championsips in '99.
