I was shocked to see that THE RING ranked Sturm No 7 among All Time Greats Middleweights. - Fighters like Jones, Toney, Lamotta would have an easy time with Sturm. - Felix also benefited from homedecisions: He lost clearly against Macklin and Griffith. But there were also other guys he lost to... - If he fights the absolute best outside his hometurf, it is all over. Just like AA. You have to understand that these guys fight handpicked opponents and always gets the benefit of the doubt. That being said, Sturm is a decent middleweight but not an ATG middleweight.
Exactly, but I guess people don´t read anymore. Slow glance and the list and than create a thread like this. Pathetic. :-(
I have to agree. The Ring's recent All-time Middleweight rankings were in no way credible. To rank Sturm or Abraham in the top 10 and BHop as #1 is something you would expect from the WBC or WBA. The only rationale I can think for ranking BHop #1 is due to his affilitation with Golden Boy, the current owner of The Ring. BHop is great, and had a long run as champion, but the quality and level of his opponents, simply do not match up to many other champions and do not warrant a #1 ranking. Top 10 probably. BHop in his prime as Middleweight champ, against Robinson, Monzon, Hagler? Also Toney, McCllellan, Jones, Griffith?
If Sturm manage to unify and beat His mandatory that He is avoiding like a plague, then He could be in the top ten. He could rematch His last draw that I saw winning and His win loos again Macklin.
Overrated on one person's list doesn't mean "overrated in general". In general, he's actually underrated. Just look at the fact that so many picked the mediocre Zbik against him (reactionary picks IMO - just because Zbik gave Chavez problems and Sturm struggled with Macklin and Murray...nevermind that Chavez isn't really top level himself, while Macklin and Murray were/are very legit contenders...) only for that to wind up being an utter schooling.
getting knocked out by a 37 year old lifetime junior middle weight castellijo didnt help his cause...going life and death with randy griffin 2 times..... 18 title fights of the wba and wbo and not 1 unification fight.....hes pretty good against the very mediocre
I think Sturm would suprise people with how well he would perform against a Martinez, Golovkin, or Pirog. He's a business man and a border line coward, but he's still a high level boxer he just doesn't always perform at his best (Murray, Macklin most recently). Had he made the rematch with either of those guys I'm confident he would've won convincingly.
its just too bad in this day and time we have to assume things rather than fighters settle it in the ring....we have to assume outcomes such as sturm vs lamotta , we should never have to assume sturm vs martinez, abraham, pirog, golvkin, taylor, pavlik ect
