I 100% agree. Good post...oh wait, it isn't 2009..whanh wahn wahnnnnnn. Martinez is shot and he isn't coming back. Without athleticism even Sturm beats him.

    That is plum ******ed.

Did Sergio formerly announce his retirement?

Typically when a fighter who loses a long standing belt has an immediate case for rematch thru the sanctioning body.

Yeah, I don't think anyone wants to see an immediate rematch, but I wouldnt rule it out if Martinez gets a couple of quality wins like Sturm or Rubio or Lee under his belt. And you'd have to like his chances vs any of them.:think

Martinez isn't just shot, his injuries make it so that his almost physically in capable of boxing, I'd pick any top 20 boxer to beat him

Martinez didn't exactly lose a SD to Cotto or anything to make a rematch even remotely plausible.

He was demolished...by a light welter.

You have no case for a rematch when you get demolished like he did.

...and for the record, based on what he showed that night, I absolutely do not like his chances with Sturm, Rubio or Lee - hell, I don't even think he is the clear #1 most capable h2h Argentinian middleweight anymore; I wouldn't like his chances against freaking Jorge Sebastian Heiland at this point.

He can't move, get it? His style is based 100% around his ability to move, and his body no longer can.

What Iv said already, he doesn't stand a chance against any top 20 middleweight

His not just shot ,his injuries almost make it physically impossible for him to box to a decent level

People who say Martinez was a great win for cotto must be insane, he got the guy at the perfect time

Really depresses me considering he's maybe my favorite current fighter, its sad he should retire, and stop deluding himself.

He got caught cold. And you know he wasnt expecting to be bulldozed.

That first punch he didnt even react to move, much less attempt to slip it. And once he was buzzed he was susceptible.

I say let him see how he fares against a Proxa or a Mora. If he can win the fights vs those guys, maybe give Sturm a go.

If he wins those......he can score another TKO payday. I just want to see the man make some bank before he walks away.:good

Interesting :think. And then there are boxers who have one pro fight and are already #1 contenders. Or even better, boxers who have been dead and are still ranked.

Good post and I agree. It's hard to swallow it because I'm a big fan of Martinez but I agree with what you said. What I don't agree is the light welter. Cotto is not a light welter anymore and hasn't been for years. If he were still a light welter he would be fighting there right now vs Danny Garcia.
